| The Area Health
Education Center (AHEC) at the Ohio University College of
Osteopathic Medicine is committed to improving the health
status of people in Appalachian Ohio through academic and
community partnerships. As part of the Ohio Statewide AHEC
Program, our primary and shared service region includes 21
Southeastern Ohio counties. All counties are rural and many
are medically underserved. The AHEC Program Office and
Center support health professions education and community
health by facilitating community – based clinical training,
providing continuing education programs for health-care
providers, and by coordinating service learning activities
such as health fairs, school visits, and campaigns to raise
public awareness of health issues. |

| OU-COM has one
Center, the Consortium for Health Education in Appalachia
Ohio (CHEAO) that provides programs and services in 20
Appalachian counties. CHEAO sponsors continuing education
programs for physicians, nurses, social workers, and allied
health professionals in Southeast Ohio. It also supports the
coordination of clinical training of medical students in
community sites and service learning activities for first
and second year medical students. CHEAO maintains a library
of health education resources for community health education
and supports health careers exploration and premedical
clinical shadowing. |
