Clinical Experiences
Goals
Specific goals for students assigned
with faculty in the clinical setting
are to:
- Acquire knowledge of the dynamics of a
physician’s office.
- Develop skills by performing basic physical
assessments
in the presence of clinical faculty.
- Expand psychosocial skills.
- Draw from knowledge acquired in the classroom
or lecture
hall to
understand the complexities of
the human body and possible disease processes
witnessed in this CCE assignment.
While participating in the assignment with
clinical faculty, medical students will:
- Recognize the manner in which the clinical
faculty
interacts with patients and the
ancillary staff.
- Develop interviewing and psychosocial skills
essential to the physician-patient relationship,
such as:
- Obtaining a history from the patient.
- Interviewing patients regarding the chief
complaint.
- Providing appropriate patient education
related to each patient (e.g. newly prescribed
medications, lifestyle changes, newly diagnosed
disease process, etc.)
- Develop basic physical assessment skills, such
as:
-
Performing assessments of chief complaint.
-
Performing any other physical assessment skills
with the preceptor as appropriate for each patient
and student.
- Relate the knowledge acquired in this CCE to
that acquired
in classroom/lecture hall by:
-
Asking the clinical faculty to suggest specific
readings on a topic presented during the CCE.
-
Reflecting upon the experience.
-
Completing the evaluation forms in order to gain
insight
into the duties of the physician.
Remember: Open communication and enthusiasm to
learn
lend themselves to a good educational experience.
Clinical Faculty Evaluation
The CCE evaluation form serves as both
an educational tool and documentation of CCE
participation. Students will be submitting
evaluations of clinical faculty electronically; a
link to the form is available on
Blackboard. Comments will be sent to the faculty
anonymously at the end of the academic year.
Faculty will complete evaluations of student by
hand; the forms for you to print and take with you
to your experiences are available here.
Learning goals to structure the experience are
listed at the top of the form. You
will need one form for each CCE.
