The
premise of the new curriculum entailing an
integrated approach to learning makes learning more
enjoyable because you can see applications to basic
science topics in relation to pathological states.
This incorporation . . . clues us in as students by
preparing us earlier to be better clinical
physicians.”

Primary
Application
The
medical school application process consists of two parts, the Primary
and the Secondary application. Once your application file is complete,
OU-HCOM can begin to consider you for a potential interview.
The AACOMAS application is the Primary Application that you will
be asked to complete. On the primary application you will need
to write an essay and self-report all courses taken along with
grades earned.
Once you have submitted your application, you will
need to arrange to have official transcripts from all institutions
attended and MCAT scores sent
directly to AACOMAS. DO NOT send this information to
OU-HCOM. All
primary application information goes directly to AACOMAS for processing.
Remember to include course information on all post-secondary work
you have completed. Even if you only took one course from an institution,
you will need to record it on the application and arrange to have
a transcript from that institution sent to AACOMAS. Failure to
accurately report all work completed can result in a fraudulent
application. MCAT scores can be
electronically
submitted to AACOMAS. MCAT scores more than three
years old are considered invalid. For example, if you are applying
for the entering class of 2011, the MCAT would have to have been
taken between January 2008 to August 2010 to be considered valid.
It generally takes AACOMAS four to six weeks to process your application
once they have your official transcripts and MCAT scores. Missing
information will delay processing of your application. You can check
the status of your AACOMAS application online anytime
after submission.
The Office of Admissions
will be using the email address that you provide on the AACOMAS
application for correspondence.
Please remember to set your email permissions to
accept correspondence from oucom.ohiou.edu addresses. Make
sure that your address appears on the primary application correctly
and that you continue to monitor your account for important messages
from OU-HCOM. |

Secondary
Application
OU-HCOM
will receive your primary application electronically from AACOMAS. Your application will be screened
to determine if you are eligible to receive a secondary application. Secondary
application materials or notification of your application status
will be sent to you via the email address that you listed on
the primary application. Please make sure to set your
email permissions to accept emails from oucom.ohiou.edu addresses.
If you are expecting a secondary
application, but have not received one, you should check your
junk mail folder.
If you are selected to receive a secondary application, you will
need to do the following:
- Prepare an additional essay on the topic of why you wish to become
an osteopathic physician and why you think OU-HCOM is a good choice
for you.
- Arrange to have your letters of recommendation/evaluation sent
to OU-HCOM*.
- Out-of-state residents will need to sign a contract of admission.
An additional letter from a D.O. is strongly encouraged.
* We require either a letter from a premed committee OR two
letters from natural science faculty who taught you in class. A
committee letter is preferred. If your institution does not have
a premed committee, you must submit two letters of recommendation
from natural science faculty who taught you in class. There
are no substitutions for this requirement.
Once all the secondary application materials have been received
by the Office of Admissions, your file will be considered complete
and will be eligible for further committee review.
It is your responsibility to check on the status of your application.
The Office of Admission will not send reminders or notify students
of missing information. To check the status of your secondary application,
call the Office of Admissions at
(800) 345-1560 Monday through
Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. EST.
You may
email us
anytime or leave a voice mail message after hours and on weekends.
