Today’s health care and scientific environment supports
a compelling argument for combining a D.O. degree with a
Ph.D. Although physicians can develop an investigative
career without a Ph.D., a joint program is ideal for
training highly motivated individuals as excellent
clinicians with a comprehensive understanding of the
fundamental mechanisms underlying disease processes. It
prepares physician-scientists with training in research
methodologies to use in the study of these mechanisms.
This dual perspective brings a unique approach to both
clinical practice and the investigation of biomedical
problems.

Ohio University's D.O./Ph.D.
program is one of only five such programs nationwide.
Students in the program select research mentors engaged
in biomedically-oriented research from the
Department of Biomedical Sciences,
the Interdisciplinary
Graduate Program in Molecular and Cellular Biology, and the
Department of Biological Sciences. Students who
successfully complete the program obtain the skills
necessary to conduct or direct clinical, basic or
epidemiological research in addition to patient care.

| Admission
Requirements |
| |
Admission to Ohio University’s D.O./Ph.D.
program strongly recommends concurrent application to
both the
Heritage College
of Osteopathic Medicine and to the
Department of Biological Sciences in the College of Arts
and Sciences. Students interested in molecular and
cellular biology may also apply to the interdisciplinary
MCB Program.
If invited to interview at OU-HCOM, applicants have the
opportunity to meet with a representative from the D.O./Ph.D
program. A short application specific to the D.O./Ph.D.
program is also required.
All
applicants are required to take the GRE with a greater
than 50th percentile score in each section.
In addition, all students are expected to participate in
the
Research and Scholarly Advancement Fellowship
program during the summer between years I and II, in the
laboratory of the student’s intended Ph.D. advisor. |

and Requirements |

Section 1 consists of the preclinical years for the D.O.
degree. During this section the student will complete
the first two years of the D.O. curriculum, participate
in the
Research and Scholarly Advancement summer
fellowship, and take Level 1 of the Comprehensive
Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX).
During section 1 the student must select an approved
dissertation advisor and committee.
Section 2 consists of three years dedicated to graduate
study. A minimum of 45 graded course credit hours is
required for the Ph.D. A student may request to have up
to 23 hours from the medical school curriculum applied
toward this requirement. Students with a MS degree may
have an additional 12 credit hours applied to the 45
hour graded course requirement. Students must register
for 15 hours each quarter they are in the Ph.D. program
and complete all course work required for the Ph.D.
during this section. Students must attend one of the
established seminars or journal clubs each quarter and
give at least one presentation a year.
During the first year of Section 2, the student will
file an approved graduate degree plan. During Section 2
students must also complete the requirements for
advancing to candidacy, which include taking the
comprehensive qualifying examination, having an approved
dissertation research proposal. Before embarking on
Section 3, students must successfully complete their
doctoral research and thesis defense.
Section 3 consists of the required clinical rotations
and electives for the D.O. degree. Students will also
take Part 2 of the COMLEX.
At the end of Section 3 the student is expected to have
completed the curriculum required for both degrees and
is then awarded the D.O. through OU-HCOM and the Ph.D.
through the College of Arts and Sciences. |
