Alumni
Society Gives Special Award and Gift at CME
and All Class Reunion |
|
| |
|
The Ohio
University College of Osteopathic Medicine’s
Society of Alumni and Friends announced two
big surprises during its class reunion
Saturday, Oct. 28, 2006. |
| |
|
The first was a
Special Recognition Award presented to Dean
Jack Brose, D.O., for his “extraordinary
vision, leadership and commitment to
osteopathic education, for his advocacy on
behalf of Ohio’s medical schools, and for
embracing alumni as an integral part of the
college community,” said Society President
Thomas Anderson, D.O. (’83). |
| |
|
|
The second was a gift of $50,000 to fund Ohio University’s new integrated learning and research facility. According to Ohio University, this may be the largest one-time gift ever given by one of its alumni societies.
|
 |
| |
|
“This research
facility is the greatest opportunity for our
alumni to build on our college’s success and
help make us the most prominent osteopathic
college in the nation,” said Anderson.
Groundbreaking for the $30 million facility
is slated for spring 2007. |
| |
|
The occasion for
these awards was the fifth annual Continuing
Medical Education & All Class Reunion held
at the Hilton Easton, Columbus, Oct.
27–29, 2006. During the Class Reunion, which
brought together almost 300 physicians,
alumni and friends, the Society conducted
its annual awards ceremony, during which it
recognized eight alumni, friends and
supporters of the college for their
contributions to the osteopathic profession
and to medical education. Following the
ceremony, members of the class of 1981
reminisced, talked about the paths their
lives had taken and shared their recent
activities and accomplishments. |
| |
|
“I don’t know
where the years have gone,” said Jack Tuber,
D.O. (’81). “It’s nice seeing old friends
and acquaintances. It’s been a good
conference and a lot of fun.” |
| |
|
The three-day
CME event brought 175 physicians from across
Ohio and the nation to 22 workshops and
didactic sessions on intensive diabetes
management, advances in radiology, OMT for
the geriatric patient, dermatology case
studies and more. |
| |
|
James D. Joye,
D.O. (’88), F.A.C.C., F.S.C.A.I., delivered
the keynote address, entitled “Peripheral
Vascular Disease: Assessment, Diagnosis and
Treatment.” Joye, a renowned interventional
cardiologist recognized for his work in
medical device research and development, is
a much sought-after speaker. Although
October was a very busy month for him, he
said he “was happy to be among friends,
colleagues and former classmates for this
important meeting.” |
| |
|
OU-COM students
thoroughly enjoyed and benefited from the
CME event, as well. |
| |
|
“This has been a
great conference. It’s a good opportunity to
meet alumni and other OU-COM faculty,” said
Kim Jackson, first-year medical student.
“I’ve enjoyed the seminars; I thought the
radiology seminar and EKG workshop were very
beneficial. I’m having a great time.” |
| |
|
“The conference
is really great, it’s a wonderful
opportunity to get together with OU-COM
alumni and faculty to network, and it’s nice
to see how excited the alumni are to have
students around,” said Rachel Holt,
second-year medical student. |
| |
|
But it was the
Society that made the biggest splash of the
weekend when it surprised Brose with its
first Special Recognition Award. “His
enthusiasm is contagious,” said Anderson. |
| |
|
Upon receiving
the award, Brose said that one of the best
parts of being dean at OU-COM has been
working with graduates. |
| |
|
“Getting out and seeing former students and
their tremendous successes in medicine
generates so much enthusiasm at the college,”
said Brose. “Our graduates are certainly a
driving force behind what we do each and
every day.” |
| |
|
In his closing remarks, Brose acknowledged
former Dean Frank Myers, D.O., who was in
attendance, as his mentor during Myers’
tenure as dean from 1977–1993. |
| |
|
“Jack Brose exemplifies the responsibility
that we, too, have to our graduates: to work
with them and advocate for them as we help
them become integral in the life of Ohio
University,” continued Anderson. “We are
most fortunate to have such extraordinary
leadership and support at OU-COM. Jack
understands and values the importance of
alumni relations and the ongoing involvement
of our graduates in the future growth of our
college.” |
