Global Health Initiative
Health Sciences Center

The Global Health Initiative has developed relationships with two third party providers: International Service Learning and  Child Family Health International who offer opportunities at sustained community health programs in several countries. Students can also arrange their own programs through church organizations, other universities, hospitals and the  American Medical Student Association. These must be planned 6-12 months in advance.

Rotations to countries with State Department Warnings will not be approved.
Information on current State Department warnings can be found at: http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_1764.html.

When is the best time to participate?

HCOM Students:  The 4th year is the ideal time.  Rotations in the 3rd year can be made under special circumstances.  To receive credit you must complete the application process and ensure that there is a preceptor and location agreement in place.

1st and 2nd year medical students will not not receive any credit for participating and will NOT be covered under OU-HCOM malpractice insurance.  However, please contact the Office of Global Health Programs to let us know where you are going.  Here are some travel tips that you might find useful as you prepare for your trip. If you would like to give a presentation to the OU-HCOM community once you return, we would be glad to help you with the arrangements.

  1. Contact the Office of Global Health Programs to indicate your interest in an independent rotation.  We are happy to provide assistance in identifying a location or program and completing the application process.

  2. Identify a program, location and preceptor.

  3. Follow the Checklist for Independent International Rotations to apply for the program and complete the necessary paperwork.  The application process includes payment of a $150 administrative fee.

  4. If your preceptor and/or international host institution do not have current agreements with OU, you will need to request that your CORE Office initiate the completion of a Faculty Profile Form and a host institution Affiliation/Educational Agreement.  These forms must be received before your rotation can be approved.  (Your CORE Office may contact the Office of Global Health if they need more information on this process.)

  5. Complete the on-line application: http://eais.admsrv.ohio.edu/eais/student/ and supplemental application http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/international/SupplementalApp2012.htm.

  6. Review, sign and return the Guidelines for Ethical Practice for International Rotations.
