Community Service Programs and Ohio Athletics sponsor a Red Cross Blood Drive at the Convocation Center Wednesday and Thursday

By Brooke Bunch

Area residents are encouraged to give the gift of life during a blood drive sponsored by Community Service Programs and Ohio Athletics.  The two-day drive — to be held Wednesday, Sept. 29, and Thursday, Sept. 30 — welcomes eligible donors from noon to 6 p.m. at the University’s Convocation Center.

There is always a need for blood,” says Nancy Schell, CSP program coordinator. “The supply constantly needs to be regenerated.”

Schell says the goal is to collect 120 units of blood each day during the drive, which will be broadcast live on its first day from 1 to 3 p.m. by Power 105 (FM 105.5) Radio.

Anyone who weighs at least 110 pounds, is age 17 or older and is in good health is eligible to give. Previous donors who gave blood on or before Aug. 4 can donate again. A positive ID showing date of birth is required to donate.

The drive is held in conjunction with National Osteopathic Medicine Month, which is celebrated every September to raise awareness about osteopathic physicians — one of only two fully licensed physicians in the United States who are able to prescribe medicine and perform surgery — and to encourage Americans to live healthier lives.

Schell asks that local residents and University students, staff and faculty donate during the two-day drive.

The Red Cross supplies one-half of the nation’s blood supply,“ she says. “I invite the residents of Athens to come and do their share. Blood saves lives.”

Food and refreshments, donated by local businesses, will be provided to those giving blood.

Donors are asked to make appointments, though walk-ins are welcome. To make an appointment, call (740) 593-2432 or (800) 844-2654.
