The cost and devastation of not
being prepared has been made plain by Hurricane Katrina, which
destroyed homes and lives across three states in the Gulf Coast. As
millions of Americans responded to that tragedy through giving in a
myriad of ways, giving blood locally is one way to help maintain a
state of preparedness in Athens, Ohio and the nation.
Area residents can
give blood at the American Red Cross’ two-day Welcome Back Blood
Drive, held at Ohio University’s Convocation Center on Richland
Avenue from noon to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27, and Wednesday, Sept.
28. All eligible donors are asked to come and participate in this
life-saving opportunity, which is sponsored by Community Service
Programs (CSP) and Ohio Athletics.
“There is always a
need for blood,” says Nancy Schell, CSP program coordinator.
“The supply constantly needs to be regenerated.” According to
Schell, the goal is to collect 90 units of blood each day of the
drive.
Wonder if you’re
eligible? If you’re in good health, 17 years of age or older and
weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, you are! Additional eligibility
requirements apply, including a one-year waiting period after
getting a tattoo, unless it was applied in a state-licensed and
regulated facility. Those who gave blood on or before Aug. 2, 2005,
are eligible to donate again. The American Red Cross also requires
that donors present a positive ID that includes date of birth.
Blood donors will be
provided with snacks, food and refreshments from local restaurants
and bakeries. Additionally, Power 105 (105.5 FM) Radio will be
broadcasting live from 1 to 3 p.m. on the first day of the drive.
Schell encourages
the Athens community to do its part to
help save lives.
“The Red Cross
supplies one-half of the nation’s blood supply,” says Schell. “I
invite the residents of Athens to come and do their share. Blood
saves lives.”
Those wishing to give blood are
asked to make appointments, though walk-ins are welcome. To make an
appointment, call (740) 593-2274 or email

Give blood. Give
LIFE.
