Donating blood is a great way to get
your new year in gear! All Ohio University students and faculty are
encouraged to participate in the American Red Cross’ winter blood
drive sponsored by Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine
(OU-COM) and the Ping Center. The blood drive will be held at the
Ping Center on South Green Drive from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 27.
“There is always a need for blood,”
says Nancy Schell, Community Service Program (CSP) program
coordinator for OU-COM. “The supply constantly needs to be
regenerated.” According to Schell, the goal is to collect 175 units
of blood during the blood drive.
Wonder if you’re eligible to give
the gift of life? If you’re in good health, 17 years of age or older
and weigh a minimum of 110 pounds, you are! Additional eligibility
requirements apply, including a one-year waiting period after
getting a tattoo, unless it was applied in a state-licensed and
regulated facility. Those who gave blood on or before Dec. 2, 2005,
are eligible to donate again. The American Red Cross also requires
that donors present a positive ID that includes date of birth.
Area businesses will be providing
refreshments, food and snacks for blood donors during the drive.
“However, it is still recommended that participants eat a good meal
prior to donating blood,” comments Jeremy Fisher, ComCorps
member.
“I invite the Ohio University
community to come and do their share. Giving blood is a great way
for students to give back to their community and to get involved,”
says Schell. “Donating blood saves lives.”
Those interested in giving blood are
asked to make appointments, though walk-ins are welcome. To make an
appointment, call (740) 593-2274 or email
donatebloodathens@ohio.edu and indicate when would be
convenient for you to donate. There will also be information tables
set up at Nelson Dining Hall from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17,
and at Shively Dining from 4 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, where
students may make appointments to donate.
Warm someone’s heart this winter.
Donate blood.
