Several times a year, potential
medical students from colleges and universities across the region,
as well as from Ohio University, have golden opportunities to learn
more about the college and the Centers for Osteopathic Research and
Education (CORE) at the OU-COM CORE Pre-Med Dinner program. The next
one is being held Wednesday, March 1, on the OU-COM campus. (To
RSVP, please contact Tamala Ervin, administrative assistant,
at (740) 593-8302 x4012.)
OU-COM and CORE sponsor these
evenings at different CORE locations across the state. The program
allows students to learn and interact in a relaxing setting. Last
fall, dinners were held at Doctors Hospital in Columbus and South
Pointe Hospital in Cleveland.
“Premed students will hear from
current OU-COM students and the admissions office, get a tour of
OU-COM and also learn more about osteopathic manipulative medicine,”
says Joanne McMullen, M.B.A., a CORE administrator.
“For future students the highlight of the evening is the chance to
meet current students. Current students love to talk about their
medical school experience.”
This year, the OU-COM students who
will be speaking include fourth-year students Kent Brandeberry,
Eric Rader and Angela Branda; third-year students
Adrienne Fehr and Hollie Reeves; second-year student
Saima Karim; and first-year student Kate Yanko.
John Schriner, director of
admissions, says premed students were invited from colleges and
universities within a 70-mile radius of the college. The admissions
office is there to inform premed students of OU-COM admission
prerequisites and requirements.
He expects 40 to 50 prospective
students to attend the dinner. In the past, some prospective
students have indicated that the Pre-Med Dinner was the first time
they had heard about osteopathic medicine.
“Each year we see students applying
to OU-COM that have attended the Pre-Med Dinner,” he says. “The
program is a great way for the CORE to gain exposure for its
graduate and postgraduate medical education programs and for OU-COM
to gain greater visibility with prospective medical students.”
The next dinner will be held April
4 at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren.
“The Pre-Med Dinner programs create
an interest that excites prospectives about the profession and
medical education at OU-COM,” says Schriner.
