As everyone knows, hard work usually pays off, and the hard work of John Howell, Ph.D., associate professor of physiology; Josalyn Mann, D.O., chief resident at Doctors Hospital Family Practice Clinic; Jean Rettos, D.O. (’04), chief resident at O’Bleness Memorial Hospital; Eric Martin, D.O., general surgery resident at Doctors Hospital; Kimberly Jackson, OSMIII; and the Doctors Hospital Family Practice Residency Program paid off in top awards from the American Osteopathic Association (AOA), American Osteopathic Foundation (AOF) and American College of Osteopathic Surgeons (ACOS).

The awards were presented during the 2007 American Osteopathic Association Annual Convention & Scientific Seminar held Sept. 30 to Oct. 4 in San Diego and at the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons’ 2007 Annual Clinical Assembly of Osteopathic Specialists held Oct. 18 to 21 in San Francisco.

Doctors Hospital Family Practice Residency Program received the 2007 Merck/Schering-Plough Clinical Assessment Program Residency Program of the Year Award, which was accepted by William Burke, D.O. (’88), director of the program.

Howell was honored with the AOA’s 2007 George W. Northup, D.O., Medical Writing Award for his paper, “Stretch Reflex and Hoffmann Reflex Responses to Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment in Subjects with Achilles Tendinitis.” His paper was co-authored with Karen S. Cabell, D.O. (’00); Anthony Chila, D.O.; and David C. Eland, D.O.

Mann and Rettos were two of four residents honored with the AOF’s 2007 Merck Outstanding Resident of the Year Award.

Martin was honored with the ACOS’ 2007 Robert C. Irwin Literary Competition Award for his paper, “A Comparison of Bilateral Neck Exploration (BNE) and Minimally Invasive Radio-Guided Parathyroidectomy (MIRP) for the Treatment of Primary Hyperparathyroidism: Which is the Gold Standard?”

Jackson presented her poster, “Nutrition Transition and Health Consequences Among Kenyan Elders,” which received the Bureau on International Osteopathic Medical Education and Affairs’ (BIOMEA) International Seminar (AOA) 2^nd Place Abstract Award in the Poster Competition.
