Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine recently announced the recipients of this year’s Jerry A. Zinni, D.O., Memorial Scholarship. This year, the four recipients of the scholarship were first-year medical student Gurbinder Singh of Macedonia; second-year medical Crystal (Woodside) Joyce of Seven Hills; third-year medical student Timothy Neely of Ravenna; and fourth-year medical student Sana Hasan of North Royalton. The scholarship, which is funded by the Northeastern Ohio Healthcare Foundation, is a $10,000 award given to each of the four medical students and may be used toward the cost of tuition, room and board, textbooks and other educational related expenses.

“Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine is most grateful and appreciative of the generous philanthropic support from the Northeastern Ohio Healthcare Foundation over the past years,” said Sharon Zimmerman, the college’s director of medical development and executive director of alumni affairs. “This scholarship provides needed support and assists the college in recruiting some of the best and brightest students in Ohio.”

The Zinni Memorial Scholarship is awarded to medical students from specific Northeastern Ohio counties who meet the criteria for award.

The scholarship, which was established in 2000, is named after Jerry A. Zinni, D.O., who in 1960 founded the not-for-profit Richmond Heights General Hospital and was a leader and champion of the osteopathic medical profession. The Northeastern Ohio Healthcare Foundation carries on an essential part of the hospital’s original mission and Zinni’s vision — helping disadvantaged patient populations, improving community health care and furthering osteopathic medical education.
