30th Ohio University College of
Osteopathic Medicine Commencement
WHERE:
Ohio University Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial
Auditorium
WHEN:
Saturday, June 6, 2009, 10 a.m.
THIS YEAR’S HIGHLIGHTS:
New this year: Graduates will be hooded by their
selected mentors, physicians who provided guidance
and expertise
to help the students advance their careers, enhance
their education, and build their professional
networks. Previously, the dean has hooded graduates.
Of the 104 graduates, 73 will receive their
ceremonial hoods from their mentors, 23 of whom are
OU-COM alumni.
“Allowing the mentors to hood the graduates
signifies the important role these physicians played
in the students’ professional education,” said
OU-COM Dean Jack Brose, D.O.
This year also marks the first Commencement keynote
speaker chosen by members of the graduating class.
Jay H. Shubrook, Jr., D.O. (’96), an assistant
professor of family medicine at OU-COM will deliver
the Commencement address. Shubrook was named “Young
Family Physician of the Year” in March by the
American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians.
He is a noted diabetes researcher and has a private
practice in family medicine with University Medical
Associates of Athens.
Distinguished guests and other speakers include:
-
Robert
Juhasz, D.O., representing the
American Osteopathic Association
-
Barbara
Bennett, D.O. (’84), president of
the Ohio Osteopathic Association
-
Jeffrey
Stanley, D.O. (’82), president of
the OU-COM Society of Alumni and
Friends
The 104 new graduates
of the Ohio University College of Osteopathic
Medicine on June 6 will join the ranks of more than
OU-COM 2,450 alumni. More than 64 percent of
OU-COM’s graduates practice in Ohio, with some 44
percent working in rural and underserved communities
of fewer than 50,000 residents. In addition to
providing health care, these alumni physicians also
conduct research, scholarship and community service.
