The yearly
poster exhibition
and competition at
the annual Ohio
Osteopathic
Symposium at the
Hilton Columbus at
Easton Town Center
on Saturday, April
30, grew this year.
Sponsored by the
Ohio University
College of
Osteopathic Medicine
(OU-COM), the
Centers for
Osteopathic Research
and Education
(CORE), and the Ohio
Osteopathic
Association (OOA),
expanded to include
participants from
outside Ohio to a
regional focus.
Research abstracts
and posters were
submitted from Ohio,
Michigan, West
Virginia and
Pennsylvania.
Participation in the
Exhibition and
Competition grew 51%
over 2010.
Competition was open
to osteopathic
residents, interns
and medical
students. Exhibition
was open to all
participants.
Research posters
were judged in two
categories: case
reports and
clinical/biomedical.
The first place
poster received
$1,000 and the
second place poster
received $500.
Faculty, osteopathic
physicians and
associated personnel
exhibited research
posters, but were
ineligible to
compete.
In the 2011 OOA/CORE
category for Case
Reports,
Chase Scarbrough,
OMS III,
and
Joseph Kuhn, OMS II
, won first place
for their poster “Transdermal
Metformin for the
Treatment of Type 2
Diabetes: A Case
Series.” Azeem Vasi,
DO, a third-year
resident at
Grandview Hospital
and Medical Center
in Dayton, won
second place for his
poster “Single-State
Reconstruction of a
Large Full-Thickness
Scalp Defect with
Anterior and
Posterior Bipedicled
Scalp Rotational
Flaps: A Case Report
and Review of
Literature.”
In the 2011 OOA/CORE
category for
Clinical/Biomedical
research, Firoza
(Tasha) Faruqui,
D.O., a resident at
Cincinnati
Children’s Hospital,
won first place for
her poster “Sleep
Disorders in
Children: A National
Assessment of
Pediatricians’
Practices and
Perceptions.”
Two second place
winners were awarded.
Emilie Prot, OMS I,
won for her poster
“Medicinal Plant Use
and Traditional
Medicinal Practices
in Rural Mexico: A
Case Study in
Tamaula, Guanajuato,
Mexico.” John Idoine,
III, DO, a
third-year resident
at Doctors Hospital
in Columbus, won for
his poster “Plating
of Acute Humeral
Diaphyseal Fractures
via an Anterior
Approach in Multiple
Trauma Patients.”

and Competition over
the past several

research and reward
them for outstanding
research efforts in
osteopathic
medicine. We look

Ohio Osteopathic
Association as our
regional competition
grows.”
In all, 71 abstracts
were submitted for
this year's event.
Of the 59 poster
abstracts accepted
for the competition,
23 posters presented
case reports and 34
posters presented
the findings of
clinical/biomedical
research. Twelve
posters were also
exhibited, but were
not eligible
competition.
