Under the banner theme “Pride
in Our Profession,” the 2005-2006 Distinguished Osteopathic
Commitment (D.O.C.) Awards honored some of OU-COM’s most
accomplished members in one elegant evening of laughter,
celebration and tributes.
On Wednesday, April 19, OU-COM
faculty, staff and students, along with friends and family,
assembled together in Irvine Hall before 6 p.m. for a dinner
catered by Lui Lui, followed by the D.O.C. Awards ceremony.
“Everyone seems to have enjoyed
themselves,” says second-year student Danielle Miller,
who served as the Student Awards Night chairwoman and last
year’s Student Government secretary. “I know I spent a lot of
time on this and so did many others. This is a very proud
moment, and I am pleased with how it has turned out.”
A committee of first- and
second-year students selected the winning nominees for each
award. Then, student presenters read aloud glowing excerpts from
the nomination forms after announcing each recipient’s name.
OU-COM Student Government, Sigma Sigma Phi, the Office of
Student Affairs and the Office of Alumni Affairs jointly
sponsored the ceremony, with Student Government President
Mathew Rose and Sigma Sigma Phi President Amy Miyoshi
presiding over the event. Meanwhile, emcees for the event,
Scott Reineck and John Idione, kept the audience
amused with clever banter and comical videos.
“The emcees were spectacular,”
says Dean Jack Brose, D.O. “I thought that the skits and
videos that the students did were of professional quality, and
they were very, very entertaining.”
Dean Brose received one of the
most-esteemed awards of the evening, the Commendation from the
Class of 2008, in honor of his praiseworthy commitment to the
students.
“Many students would agree that
Dean Brose is an individual who is easily approachable, cares
about the students and truly listens,” says second-year student
Miyoshi. “He is your mentor, teacher, colleague and friend. Not
only do you admire him as a leader, but he encompasses the
charisma and compassion that motivates you to challenge your
limits and think outside the box.”
Dean Brose said he felt
“tremendously honored” that the class bestowed this mark of
respect upon him.
“It really was a huge thing for
me,” he says. “I’ve never had a class do that before. I was
surprised and extraordinarily happy about it. And very
grateful.”
Another high-profile honor, the
Student D.O. of the Year Award, went to second-year student
Eric Beck.
“Eric Beck is a great asset to
OU-COM,” Miyoshi explains. “He has unselfishly helped and shared
his knowledge with students, a characteristic that helps define
an osteopathic physician. He was an excellent recipient for the
award.”
Three retiring faculty were
honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award; the illustrious
careers of Robert Hikida, Ph.D., professor of
microanatomy; Peter Johnson, D.O., professor of
biochemistry; and John Howell, Ph.D., associate
professor of physiology, were celebrated through a
commemorative video made by Rose.
