Wayne Carlsen, D.O., F.A.C.O.I.,
assistant dean for clinical education at
the Ohio University Heritage College of
Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM), has been
elected vice chair of the board of
directors of the National Board of
Osteopathic Medical Examiners (NBOME).
Carlsen has served NBOME, the testing
organization that provides the pathway
to licensure for osteopathic physicians,
in various capacities since 1989. He
became a member of its board of
directors in 2005 and has since served
on the board’s executive committee.
“It has truly been an honor to be
involved in the efforts of the NBOME
over the last 20 plus years and to
support their mission to protect the
public by providing the means to assess
competencies for osteopathic medicine,”
Carlsen said. “I have enjoyed the
opportunity to work with many talented
and dedicated individuals—including
volunteer national faculty, board
members and the NBOME’s hard-working
professional staff.”
Carlsen’s two-year appointment became
effective following NBOME’s annual board
meeting, held Dec. 21, 2011, in San
Diego, Calif. In 2013, he will become
chair of NBOME’s board of directors,
replacing Janice Knebl, D.O., M.B.A. The
recently installed Knebl is professor of
medicine and chief of the Division of
Geriatrics/Department of Medicine at the
Texas College of Osteopathic
Medicine/University of North Texas
Health Science Center (UNTHSC/TCOM) at
Fort Worth.
Vice Chair Carlsen’s duties include
participating in the governance of the
NBOME, oversight of the financial
stability of the organization and
participation in board committees.
“I will also have the opportunity to
represent the NBOME at a wide variety of
medical education and medical licensure
meetings across the country over the
next several years,” Carlsen said.
Carlsen will continue in his role as
assistant dean for clinical education at
OU-HCOM, where he has been a faculty
member since 1993. Carlsen is an
associate professor of geriatric
medicine and gerontology and also serves
on the college’s executive committee,
and he is the medical director for the
college’s Community Health Programs and
Area Health Education Center. He has
served as medical director of several
skilled nursing facilities in
southeastern Ohio, and has been a
practicing geriatrician for 20 years.
