DOC awards
recognize Steinbergh, Gonzalez and many
more
Highlights from
the 2009 Distinguished Osteopathic
Commitment Awards
By Richard Heck
April 28, 2009
Long-time college
friend, Anita Steinbergh, D.O., received
a top honor, the Osteopathic Mentor
Award, at this year’s Distinguished
Osteopathic Commitment (DOC) Awards,
held Wednesday, April 22, at Baker
Center University Center. At this annual
event, more than 60 individuals were
recognized for their contributions to
osteopathic medical education at OU-HCOM.
Upon accepting the
award, Steinbergh, a family physician in
Westerville, Ohio, defined mentoring as
“developing a friendship.” She serves as
the Ohio Osteopathic Association
representative on the Ohio State Medical
Board.
“Dr. Steinbergh is an excellent
representative of osteopathic medicine
through her work on the Ohio State
Medical board,” wrote Andrew Henson,
OMS I, who nominated her. “She is
the epitome of what a mentor, physician
and friend should be.”
Steinbergh, a graduate of the
Philadelphia College of Osteopathic
Medicine, recruited Henson not only to
osteopathic medicine, but also to
OU-HCOM. The two met during Henson’s
undergraduate education at Colorado
State University, when he served as a
resident assistant for Steinbergh’s son.
“I didn’t understand what osteopathic
medicine was,” Henson said. “When Dr.
Steinbergh discovered my interest in
medical school, she quickly began to
educate me on what makes D.O.s unique in
the medical world. She invited me to her
home in Ohio to shadow her in her
practice and to visit OU-HCOM.”
Keynote speaker Robert Juhasz, D.O., a
member of the American Osteopathic
Association Board of Trustees,
emphasized that mentors can help not
only osteopathic medical students, but
also practicing physicians.
“As you go out from Ohio University, it
is important to find people who provide
support and good examples to follow,” he
said, adding that the CORE provides a
built-in network of potential mentors
and professional contacts. “You have one
of the finest consortiums for medical
education in the United States with the
CORE. Take pride when you go.”
In other highlights from the banquet,
the 2009 Student D.O. of the Year Award
went to Christina González, OMS IV,
a family practice fellow, and the
transition ceremony was held for leaders
