CHP observes Breast Cancer Awareness Month

To raise awareness about breast and cervical cancers and promote their early diagnosis, OU-COM’s Community Health Programs and Area Health Education Center are increasing their free and reduced-cost screenings and information throughout Southeastern Ohio in October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The breast and cervical cancer screenings, scheduled for six locations in Athens, Hocking, Meigs and Perry Counties, aim to help uninsured or underinsured women who are middle-aged or older or who have a family history of cancer.

In addition to the screenings, a community presentation will be held at Buckeye Hills Career Center in Gallia County Oct. 14 at 1 p.m., and a public education display will be set up at Ohio University’s Bird Arena Oct. 24 from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Columbus-based Susan G. Komen for the Cure, a non-profit organization that raises money for breast cancer education, research and health services, will provide major funding for the following screenings, each scheduled 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.:

·         Oct. 6, Scenic Hills Nursing Home, Bidwell

·         Oct. 13, United Methodist Church, Tuppers Plains

·         Oct. 20, Parks Hall, Ohio University, Athens

·         Oct. 21, Old M&M School, McConnelsville

·         Oct. 27, Hocking Valley Community Hospital, Logan

·         Oct. 28, Perry County Senior Center, New Lexington

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Faculty Development Tidbit: Lecture components: Part I

Silberman (1990) suggests five approaches to maximizing students’ understanding and retention during lectures. These can help ensure the effective transfer of knowledge:

The key to an effective lecture style is to break down the lecture into its component parts and use a variety of approaches within each component. This is especially critical when a group of students will be attending a series of lectures by the same educator.

Find more “Teaching Tips” at your OU-COM & CORE faculty development Web resources: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm or www.ohiocore.org/cf/index.htm. If you have a great strategy that seems to always work, please send it to me, and I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit.
