NEWS

Documentary viewing focuses on Guinea worm eradication

OU-COM’s chapter of the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) and Global Health Programs will co-host a viewing of the new documentary, Foul Water Fiery Serpent, on Tuesday, May 3, at 5:30 p.m. in Irvine 199.

The documentary focuses on the efforts of health workers to eradicate the Guinea worm parasite in Africa. The condition, which can be very painful and debilitating, affects people who drink water contaminated with the parasite’s larvae. The worm can grow up to three feet long inside of a person and can only be removed slowly through blisters that form in the skin.

Foul Water Fiery Serpent follows health care providers over a three-year period as they work to wipe out the last of the Guinea worms in Ghana and Sudan by distributing water filter cloths, treating water sources, educating villagers, and treating victims. For information about the film and to watch a clip, go to http://foulwaterfieryserpent.com/fwfs/Default.htm.

Besides  AMSA and Global Health Programs, other sponsors for the  screening include  the Ohio University African Studies Department, the Center for International Studies, and the College of Health Sciences and Professions.
