ANNOUNCEMENTS

Records retention seminar planned

On Wednesday, Aug. 24 from 9 to 10 a.m. in Grosvenor West 111, Bill Kimok, university archivist and records manager, will be at OU-HCOM to give a power point presentation on records retention.  The policy for records retention establishes general guidelines and procedures by which to assure economy and efficiency in the identification, retention, retrieval, preservation and destruction of university records in compliance with state and federal regulations.

It is very important that each Department Head designate someone in their department to attend this meeting to establish and maintain compliance with current records retention guidelines specific to records that are created or received by their office.

The session also will be available via video conferencing at the CORE sites. Please contact Dan Smith at 593-2460 to notify him that you will be attending via videoconference so he knows which room to connect.

E-waste recycling available

The university has installed E-waste cabinets for the recycling of cell phones, toner cartridges or ink jet cartridges, batteries (rechargeable or regular dry cell batteries) as well as CDs and compact florescent bulbs. Most of the green and white cabinets are located in lobby areas of buildings, but the cabinets in Grosvenor Hall are located on the ground floor near Grosvenor West. The cabinets in Irvine Hall are located on The Bricks, and the cabinets in the ARC are located in the atrium/living room near the OU-HCOM Society of Alumni and Friends Café, and the vending area between the building and Irvine Hall.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Faculty Development Tidbit:

Instructional Strategy to Engage Learners: “In The Hot Seat”

Purpose:  To motivate student learning

Description: In this activity, several students will be asked to sit in the "Hot Seat" and answer questions related to the topic of study.

Procedure:

1.        Prior to the beginning of class, the teacher will prepare questions related to the topic of study and write them on sticky notes.  Four to five questions are usually enough.

2.        Place the sticky notes underneath student desks/chairs so that they are hidden from view.

3.        At the start of the class, inform students that several of them are sitting on "Hot Seats" and will be asked to answer questions related to the topic of study for the day.

4.        Have students check their desks/chairs for the strategically placed sticky notes.

5.        Students who have questions on sticky notes will then take turns reading the question and attempting to provide an answer.  Due to the nature of this motivational activity, these should be questions that students are able to answer.

Sample Hot Seat Questions:

Internet:

1.     What is your favorite search engine and why?

2.     When was the last time you used the internet to complete a classroom assignment?

3.     If you had to recommend a website to a friend, which one would you pick and why?

4.     What do you think would be the impact if the Internet was gone tomorrow?

5.     Do you think that students should be allowed to use the Internet unsupervised?  Why or why not?

NOTE FROM STEVE:  This looks like it could be great fun and a good “Attention Step” to any lesson.  You could use a “Do You Want To Be A Millionaire” approach and allow the student to call on a friend or collaborate with three close students/colleagues.  Great for review and perhaps preview to see who has done the reading (if you use it for the latter…WARN them first that that’s what you’re doing…students will respond much better if they know what’s coming).
