Schweitzer Fellowship

Students: Learn about prestigious national fellowship opportunity

OU-HCOM students are encouraged to attend an information session about the Athens-Columbus Schweitzer Program, which offers fellowships for students to gain exposure to health care disparities and enhance leadership skills.

 

Kimberly Herrmann, OMS II, and Heather Datsko, OMS II, current Schweitzer fellows, will share their experiences at the session on Thursday, Dec. 15, at noon in Irvine 199.

 

The fellowship is open to students enrolled in a graduate or professional degree program from April 2012 through April 2013.  Fellows receive a $3,000 stipend. Applications are due Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012. Learn more about the fellowship and download an application

Study examines OMT effect on nervous system

Thad Wilson, Ph.D., associate professor of physiology, received a $98,400 American Osteopathic Association grant for a research project that could benefit those who experience hyperhidrosis, a sweating disorder that affects 7.8 million Americans.

 

Wilson's study will determine whether osteopathic manipulation treatment has the ability to alter the autonomic nervous system's output to the skin and help decrease sweat gland function. Read more

Attend Winter Blast, assist Diabetes Free Clinic

Don't miss OU-HCOM's final social gathering of 2011, the Winter Blast, on Wednesday, Dec. 14, at 11:30 on The Bricks. Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food donations to help the Diabetes Free Clinic, which provides uninsured patients with access to health foods.

 

Needed food items include peanut butter; canned tuna in water; dried beans, peas and lentils; whole grain pasta; canned fruit in water and juice and tomato products with regular or low sodium; canned beans and vegetables; unsweetened hot and cold cereals; 100 percent fruit juice and unsweetened applesauce.

 

Cost is $7 at the door, or $3 if you bring a dessert.

Donate items to My Sisters Place

The OB/GYN Club will collect donations for My Sisters Place today through Saturday from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. outside the Learning Resource Center and the Student Affairs Office in Grosvenor 018. Donations of personal hygiene items for women, diapers and Athens Transit bus passes are being sought.

Reminder: E-mail distribution lists available via Outlook

Faculty, staff and students who want to send college-wide emails can now do so through Microsoft Outlook by using college distribution lists. College lists include:

  • OU-HCOM employees (faculty and staff)
  • OU-HCOM Class of 2012
  • OU-HCOM Class of 2013
  • OU-HCOM Class of 2014
  • OU-HCOM Class of 2015

Call for abstracts at OOS research competition 

Abstracts are still being accepting for the second annual Regional Osteopathic Poster Exhibition and Competition, sponsored by OU-HCOM, the CORE, and the OOA. Abstracts will be accepted from students, interns and residents, faculty, medical administrators and practicing physicians from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia and Pennsylvania for the competition, which will be held Saturday, April 21, at the Columbus Hilton at Easton Town Center as part of the annual Ohio Osteopathic Symposium.

 

The competition will feature three categories: clinical/biomedical research, case reports, and health policy/educational issues, the latter of which is restricted to faculty and administrators.

 

Students, interns and residents only are eligible for a $1,000 first prize and a $500 second prize in the clinical/biomedical research and case reports categories. Abstracts should be no longer than 250 words and are due by Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012.

Faculty: Answers to classroom challenges available

The Office of Faculty Development has purchased Magna Press Publications' "20 Minute Mentor Programs," a series of fast, focused and intensive courses designed to help faculty members tackle unexpected challenges in the classroom.

 

Each course comes with a CD that includes presentation slides, a transcript, a discussion guide and synopsis. The courses are available for independent viewing, or individual or group viewing followed by discussion with a member of the faculty development team.
