Learn about residencies from the Outstanding Resident of the Year

Draion Burch, D.O. ('07), clinical assistant professor for the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine's Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Services, returns to campus Tuesday, Dec. 6, at 5 p.m. in Irvine 194, to talk about the AOA and boards, internships and residencies.

 

Before completing his residency this past summer, Burch was chief obstetrics and gynecology resident at St. John Providence Health System - Osteopathic Division in Warren, Mich. He also served as a resident representative on the AOA Board of Trustees and the Michigan Osteopathic Association, and as the Michigan delegate for the AOA House of Delegates.

 

In October, he was one of four recipients of the Outstanding Resident of the Year Award from the American Osteopathic Foundation.

 

Burch's visit is sponsored by the Office of Medical Development and Alumni Affairs and the Office of Student Affairs. Food will be served.

Grant helps CHP improve kids' diets, activity levels

Community Health Programs is helping Athens County preschools and high schools implement national programs aimed at encouraging students to eat healthier and get active.

 

The need to fight childhood obesity in this region is clear. According to a 2010 Ohio Department of Health study on obesity prevalence among Ohio's third graders, children living in Appalachian counties had significantly higher rates of obesity compared with children living in other counties within the state.

('89), assistant professor of family medicine, director of the OMM Pre-Doctoral Fellowship and CORE assistant dean, is among the authors of the third edition of Pain Procedures in Clinical Practice, published this fall by Elsevier. Schweitzer Fellowship

Prestigious national fellowship opportunity for students

OU-HCOM students are encouraged to attend an information session about the Athens-Columbus Schweitzer Program, which offers fellowships for students to gain exposure to health care disparities and enhance leadership skills.

 

Kimberly Herrmann, OMS II, and Heather Datsko, OMS II, current Schweitzer fellows, will share their experiences at the session on Thursday, Dec. 15, at noon in Irvine 199.

 

The fellowship is open to students enrolled in a graduate and professional degree program from April 2012 through April 2013.  Fellows receive a $3,000 stipend. Applications are due Feb. 1, 2012. Learn more about the fellowship and download an application

Receive an OMM treatment at Parks Hall clinic

The OMM Fellows Clinic offers faculty and staff the opportunity to not only learn about the college's OMM program and meet our OMM Fellows firsthand, but to have acute and longstanding problems addressed.

 

OMM Fellows provide osteopathic diagnosis and treatment supervised by an attending physician at Parks Hall on Mondays from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wait times are usually short. Call 740.593.2447 and make an appointment today.

Call for abstracts for Ohio Osteopathic Symposium 

Abstracts are still being accepting for the second annual Regional Osteopathic Poster Exhibition and Competition, sponsored by OU-HCOM, the CORE, and the OOA. Abstracts will be accepted from students, interns and residents, faculty, medical administrators and practicing physicians from Ohio, Michigan, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia and Pennsylvania for the competition, which will be held Saturday, April 21, at the Columbus Hilton at Easton Town Center as part of the annual Ohio Osteopathic Symposium.

 

The competition will feature three categories: clinical/biomedical research, case reports, and health policy/educational issues, the latter of which is restricted to faculty and administrators.

 

Students, interns and residents only are eligible for a $1,000 first prize and a $500 second prize in the clinical/biomedical research and case reports categories. Abstracts should be no longer than 250 words and are due by Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012.

Besides sharing holiday food, fun and companionship, this year's Winter Blast aims to help the Diabetes Free Clinic. Faculty, staff and students are asked to bring non-perishable food items to this year's holiday gathering on Wednesday, Dec. 14, at noon on the Irvine Bricks. The food will be donated to the Diabetes Free Clinic, which provides uninsured patients with access to healthy foods

OMM Club seeks items for annual auction

The Student American Academy of Osteopathy (OMM Club) is seeking donations for the group's annual auction, scheduled for Jan. 12, 2012, at 6 p.m.  Proceeds are used to send students to the National AAO convention. Faculty, staff and students are asked to donate items for the auction. Past auction items have included OMM tables, motorcycle riding lessons, text books, baked goods, dinners and many other items. Donate items to My Sisters Place

The OB/GYN Club will collect donations for My Sisters Place today through Saturday from 1 to 2 p.m. outside the Learning Resource Center and the Student Affairs Office in Grosvenor 018. Donations of personal hygiene items for women, diapers and Athens Transit bus passes are being sought.
