Cancer drug discovered at OU receives investment

New York-based company Phosplatin Therapeutics (pronounced foss-Plah-ten) has licensed a new class of anti-cancer compounds developed at Ohio University that could lead to a new chemotherapy treatment for ovarian cancer and other solid tumors.

Professor Rathindra Bose, vice president for research, dean of the Graduate College and OU-COM professor of biomedical sciences, designed and conducted the studies on the new compounds, which have successfully and safely inhibited ovarian cancer tumor progression in mice. OU-COM research studies causes and prevention of fainting

Thad Wilson, Ph.D., associate professor of physiology and a researcher with the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Institute for Neuromusculoskeletal Research, wants to find ways to keep people from fainting.

Wilson and Craig Crandall, Ph.D., a professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, have been conducting experiments over the past 10 years to get answers for the one million U.S. patients evaluated annually for syncope (fainting).  It is estimated that about one percent of emergency department visits and hospital admissions are for evaluation of a syncopal episode, and individuals with cardiac or neurological disorders have an increased incidence of fainting. Wilson said their findings are important because they will enable scientists to start developing ways to counteract syncope. Military students receive commissions

Seven first-year OU-COM students have taken their oath of office to accept commissions in the United States military. “These are very competitive scholarships among students from across the country, and it takes a lot of persistence and energy to complete the process,” said Steve Davis, Ph.D., director of faculty development and advisor to the student organization Association of Military Physicians and Surgeons.

The seven first-year students include Luke Menner, OMSI,  Lucas Vannoy, OMSI, and Meagan Verbillion, OMSI, who all took the oath to become a member of the Air Force. Brandon Dugar, OMSI, and Carrie Dunham, OMSI, took the oath to become a member of the Navy. Joshua Kuroiwa, OMSI, and Jessica Mitterholzer, OMSI, took the oath to join the Army.

AMA chapter shines at regional conference

During the weekend of Jan. 28, OU-COM’s American Medical Association chapter attended the Region V Conference in Cincinnati. OU-COM AMA members generated the highest amount of donations of any school attending in the annual “Penny War” fundraiser for “Action for Health Kids,” an organization that fights childhood obesity. The OU-COM AMA chapter raised $78.85, which helped Ohio win for the state with the most donations. The competition and conference included all medical schools in Ohio, West Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky and Michigan.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Faculty Development Tidbit:  Teaching Tip #: 32 Student Feedback Can Help You Improve Your Teaching: Getting Student Feedback

Here are some questions you might want to ask your students to get a feel for how the class is going.  What I usually do is give the students index cards and ask them to label each side… 1 and 2.  Then give the students 3-5 minutes to answer the following questions (They do not need to put their names on the cards).

1.       What do you think of the class so far?

2.       If you were the professor, what would you do differently?

NOTE FROM STEVE: Students, like all people, care more about what you know when they know you care!  Typically, you only get feedback at the end of the block…then it’s too late for the current students.  Always, fight for feedback and constantly seek to improve.

Find more tips at your OU-COM & CORE faculty development web resources: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm or www.ohiocore.org/cf/index.htm.  If you have a great strategy that seems to always workplease send it to me, and I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit.
