Students receive alumni grant for research

Two students at the Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine received Sybert Family Orthopedic Research Award grants from the college’s Institute for Neuromusculoskeletal Research.

The award, now in its second year, is designed to promote osteopathic student research in the field of orthopedics. The award provides up to $5,000 to an OU-COM student in support of research.

Paul H. Eichenseer, OMS III, received a $3,000 grant for his project, “Fine Element Modeling of the Human Sacroiliac Joints,” and David J. Goss Jr., OMS II, received a grant for $2,000 for his project, “Neurophysiology of Spinal Manipulation.”

Funding for the award was provided by Daryl Sybert, D.O. (’86), F.A.O.A.O., OU-COM clinical associate professor of orthopedic surgery and an orthopedic surgeon at the Mt. Carmel New Albany Surgical Hospital. Read more at http://www.oucom.ohiou.edu/News/press/SybertAward/index.htm.

CORE Hospital Libraries receive book edited by Chila

The new, third edition of Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine, published in 2010, was chosen by the Core Osteopathic Principles and Practices Committee (COPPC)  as their annual Osteopathic reference book to be provided to each CORE Hospital Library.

Foundations of Osteopathic Medicine is a compilation of articles written by a number of osteopathic medical educators throughout the United States and compiled by the American Osteopathic Association. OU-COM’s Anthony G. Chila, D.O., professor of osteopathic manipulative medicine, was the executive editor for this edition, and Robert A. Cain, D.O., clinical professor of pulmonology at Grandview Medical Center, was a contributing author.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Faculty Development Tidbit:  Teaching Tip #11: Remember to Review

Begin each class session with a five-minute interactive review of the concepts dealt with in previous classes.  Get students involved with the content.

NOTE FROM STEVE: This is a great “attention-getting” step. See how many student neurons you can get to fire regarding your previous topic. They usually know more than (WHO?) might think, but it takes a little time and effort to pull up undergraduate or even previous day’s work.  Grease the skids for today’s lesson by asking a few key questions via Turning Point or even Power Point, and let them commit to an answer.  Then collaborate and review.  You’ll have them right where you need them for the lesson ahead.

Find more tips at your OU-COM & CORE faculty development web resources: www.oucom.ohiou.edu/fd/programs.htm or www.ohiocore.org/cf/index.htm.  If you have a great strategy that seems to always workplease send it to me, and I’ll include it in a future Faculty Development Tidbit.
