Renovation work on microanatomy laboratory begins

            To accommodate this year’s incoming new class size, renovation work on the Grosvenor Hall microanatomy laboratory has begun.

            Funded by OU-HCOM renovation funds, the project includes a revamping of the former microanatomy laboratory, conference room 126, the OMM Fellows offices and the OMM control booth to create a larger multi-purpose laboratory space with seating for 74 students. Also as part of the renovations, new offices for both the family medicine and OMM Fellows will be created, along with additional space for the OMM laboratory and a room for a haptic back unit and individual instruction.

            Laboratory 128 also will be improved with audiovisual capabilities and equipment, movable tables with electricity at each seat, new sinks and counter space, storage for microscopes and supplies, a new demonstration table with a camera, seamless vinyl flooring and new window blinds.

            Work is expected to be completed by late August.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Relay for Life includes new event this year   

            The Athens County Relay for Life will be held July 8 and July 9 at the Athens County Fairgrounds in Athens. The annual event is the American Cancer Society’s signature fundraising event that increases awareness of cancer, supports cancer survivors and caregivers and raises money for cancer research.

            This year’s event begins July 8 with registration for the survivor’s dinner at 5 p.m., followed by a kick-off ceremony at 6 p.m. and a survivor walk at 6:15 p.m. During the evening various events will be held, including a live purse auction, a silent auction and games. At 9:15 p.m., a luminary Ceremony of Lights will take place, which symbolizes the “hope” for the relay. Magic Mama Latte will perform at 10:30 p.m., followed by local disc jockey Rockin’ Reggie at midnight.

            On July 9, a new event has been added: a 5K run/walk sponsored by Orthopedics of Southeast Ohio, which begins with a registration/check-in at 8 a.m., and the run starting at 9 a.m.

            To register in advance, forms are available at all Hocking Valley Bank locations, WellWorks and the Athens Community Center. Advance registration is only $15 for individuals or $50 for a four-person team. Registration on race day will be $20 for individuals and $70 a team. All participants will receive a Relay for Life T-shirt.

Faculty Development Tidbit: QUICK LIST OF HINTS FOR GOOD INSTRUCTION

THE INTRODUCTION

• Motivate:  Create interest. Make the individual want to learn.
• Brevity:  Make your introduction brief, clear and convincing.
• Why:  Tell students what will be learned. Stress importance to individual. Tell them how it is to be used.
• Associate:  Relate to previous instruction and to what follows.
• How:  Outline the method of presentation. Let the students know what is coming and what is expected of them.  Put the overview/outline up on the second big screen or a flip chart so they know where you’re at, where you’ve been, where you going.
