TDI co-sponsors Chagas conference in Ecuador
OU-COM’s Tropical Disease Institute (TDI) and its partner, the Center for Infectious Disease Research (CIDR) at the Pontificia Universidad Católica del Ecuador (PUCE) in Quito, Ecuador, will join forces to host the first National Meeting on Research into Chagas Disease on March 18.
“One of the major hurdles to Chagas Disease control is the limited awareness and knowledge by the population and authorities,” said Mario Grijalva, Ph.D., associate professor of microbiology and director of the TDI at OU-COM.
The purpose of the conference is the raise awareness about Chagas Disease in Ecuador, Grijalva said. The First National Chagas Disease Research in Ecuador conference, which will be held at PUCE, will be preceded by the 5th Meeting of the Chagas Epidemiological Network Project (Chagas EPINET) attended by researchers and scientists from the United States, eight European and seven Latin American counties, he said.
The several hundred participants at the conference will include health professionals and governmental officials, Grijalva said. Besides raising awareness of the problem, the intended goal is to generate greater financial and other support by the government to combat the disease both from a health perspective and in scientific and eradication research and other efforts, he said.

Faculty: Employ students though federal work study
Applications are now available for consideration to employ an OU-COM student in a medically-related work study position. Each year federal funding is provided to pay students for Federal Work Study positions that address medical research, administration, clinical and teaching areas.
Funds can be used to employ medical students who are enrolled (or who will be enrolled) at OU-COM and generally, the best time is the summer between the student’s first and second year. Faculty who are approved will be responsible for recruiting potential students for the position with paperwork through Student Affairs and supervising and approving timesheets for the student throughout their employment.
Priority will be given to jobs that participate in community service activities and that provide services designated to improve the quality of life, especially for low-income residents. For information on submitting an application or to find out if a student is eligible, contact Michelle Kittle, administrative coordinator, student affairs, at 593-2158 or kittle@ohio.edu.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Faculty Development Tidbit. Teaching Tip
#20 Listen.
Listen to what students have to say. Tell and show your students you care about what they have to say. Don’t cut them off, belittle their comments, etc. or soon they will learn not to participate, ask questions, etc.

Note from Steve: Students don’t generally care what you know until they know that you care. Plus, if you don’t fight for feedback it’s very unlikely that you’ll improve/make course corrections/understand what they are experiencing. Provide your students with an avenue for feedback…stop/start/continue, back channel communications (cell, twitter, blog, Bb, Facebook) – Help them, help you!
