NEWS

            OU-COM’s Offices of Communication and Student Affairs plan a new feature at this year’s Commencement exercises on Saturday, June 4, 2011.

            The ceremony will be broadcast live on the web through the Commencement page on the college’s web site.

            Similar to the process that was used to announce the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation’s announcement of the $105 million gift to the college; the ceremony can be viewed by anyone with internet access and the appropriate plug-in software.

PreCOM orientations welcome new students           

            Approximately 270 students, family and friends visited OU-COM for this year’s annual PreCOM events held on April 23 and May 14. PreCOM, which serves as a pre-orientation for incoming medical students, is a chance to see the campus again and show their family and friends where they will be studying.

            This fall’s incoming students at PreCOM were able to attend various information sessions throughout the college including financial aid, immunization, and convocation and also listened to a keynote speech by Dean Jack Brose, D.O. In addition to learning about their new college, these events were also an opportunity for incoming students to meet and get to know the current medical students at OU-COM.  

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Separations

• Kim Cannell, CORE administrative assistant (Mt. Carmel West) has resigned.  Her last working day was April 15, 2011. 
• Robert Ward, data manager, has separated from OU-COM. His last day is June 30, 2011. 
• Anthony Chila, D.O., professor, OMM, will be retiring. His last day is June 30, 2011.
• Donna Mabry, Ph.D., associate professor in Family Medicine, has separated from OU-COM. Her last day is June 30, 2011. 

Changes

• Effective July 1, 2011, Yuriy Slyvka, M.D., Ph.D., will begin a new position as anatomical sciences instructor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences. His office address will be ARC 202F and phone number will be 3-2226.

New Hires

• Effective July 1, 2011, please welcome Richa Redhu Gehlaut, M.D., Diabetes Fellow and assistant professor in the Department of Specialty Medicine. You can reach Dr. Redhu Gehlaut in Castrop Center, Suite 200 or 566-4880.
• Effective July 1, 2011, please welcome Krista Duval, D.O. (’08), assistant professor, Family Medicine. You can reach Dr. Duval in Grosvenor Hall 331 or 3-0465.
• Effective July 18, 2011, please welcome Daryn Straley, D.O., associate professor, Family Medicine. You can reach Dr. Straley in Grosvenor Hall 320 or 3-0465. 
• Effective Sept. 12, 2011, please welcome Jane Balbo, D.O. (’07), assistant professor, Family Medicine. You can reach Dr. Balbo in Grosvenor Hall 333 or 3-0465.

Prevention of Complications presentation

            This presentation by Maureen Clothier, D.O., OU-COM Dept. of Geriatric Medicine, is part of the Spring Caregivers Series, developed and co-sponsored by OU-COM. Refreshments will be provided by.

Memorial service honors body donors

            OU-COM will hold its annual memorial service to honor the donors to the Body Donor Program. Medical students are asked to wear their white coats as a way of identifying themselves to the donor’s families. Please plan on being seated by 2:50 p.m. as the service will begin promptly at 3 p.m. Refreshments will be served after the service, which will last approximately 45 minutes.

•  Event: Saturday, June 4, 10 a.m., Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.

Campus screening for film based on caregiver play

            “The Passageway,” a film based on the play, “Confessions of a Reluctant Caregiver,” by Merri Biechler, curriculum graduate assistant, will be screened.

• Event:  Sunday, June 5, 2 p.m., Templeton-Blackburn Memorial Auditorium
