Alumnus discusses physical medicine, rehabilitation
Steven W. Brose, D.O. ('05)

In his Friday, Oct. 21, student lecture, Steven Brose, D.O. ('05), spinal cord injury physiatrist and attending physician at the Louise Stokes Cleveland Veterans Administration Center, touched on everything from his field's World War II roots to today's emerging technologies. "If you're interested in improving quality of life," he said, "this is one of the best fields."

On Thursday, Oct. 20, Brose participated in the "Grand Rounds: An Adolescent with a Spinal Cord Injury," a program designed to expose OU-HCOM and College of Health Science and Professions (SHSP) students to a team-based approach to healthcare that they are likely to face in their professional careers.

The event was part of a CHSP and OU-HCOM effort to collaborate more both inside and outside the classroom. The medical landscape is shifting, the deans of both colleges say, and the two colleges are striving to stay ahead of the curve through events like this.

Making cancer survivors of the uninsured

Since 1994, OU-HCOM's Community Health Programs (CHP) have screened more than 50,000 women for breast and cervical cancer, including 487 screened in 2010 at over 65 different clinics. The free and reduced-cost screenings are offered to uninsured and underinsured women at high risk.

"Our hope is that women age 40 and older will continue to take advantage of early detection methods--mammography plus clinical breast exam," said Carrie Johnson, R.N., the program's nurse coordinator. "The key to mammography screening is that it be done routinely--once is not enough." Read more
