Student, alumnus testify at
senate committee
An OU-HCOM student and an
alumnus recently testified in
front of the Ohio Senate
Committee on Health, Humans
Services and Aging in support of
House Bill 143 (concussions and
head injuries).
According
to the Gongwer News Service,
student government President
Simon Fraser, OMS II, a
former professional football
player who testified on behalf
of the Ohio Osteopathic
Association, said the most
important safety measure
available to athletes is
education. Fraser, pictured with
committee member State Sen.
Peggy Lehner, of Dayton, spoke
of his own experience in the
National Football League, saying
that at times he would ignore
head injuries to get more
on-field time. "With the
understanding I have now, the
proper thing to do was get
evaluated by the physicians
before returning to play, but I
was young and ignorant of the
situation. All I cared about was
playing the next play," Fraser
was quoted in the Gongwer
reported.
Jason Dapore, D.O.
('01), physician
member of the Ohio Athletic
Trainers Board for the State of
Ohio and the team physician for
the Columbus Blue Jackets
National Hockey League team,
also testified in favor of the
bill, which was approved by the
committee and sent to the full
Senate for a vote. The Senate
version of the bill, which
already received approval from
the House of Representatives,
requires that all providers
serving as team physicians in
youth and high school athletic
sports can only return an
athlete to play if they are
working in consultation with,
referral to or under the
supervision of or collaboration
with a physician. The Senate
approved the bill, which now
awaits the signature of Gov.
John Kasich.
