Schweitzer fellow's work showcased
On Monday, Feb. 27, the Athens Messenger reported on a program held by the OU-HCOM Pediatrics Club and Healthy Futures Mentors, who hosted students from Trimble High School on Saturday, Feb. 25. The Healthy Futures Mentors program was started by Kimberly Herrmann, OMSII, as part of her Albert Schweitzer Fellowship.
The high school students learned about various careers in health care, and received hands-on experience with medical equipment at the college's Heritage Clinical Training and Assessment Center. Read the story.

OU-HCOM student's past, present profiled
Stephanie Blackburn, OMSIII, was featured in a story by The Post on Thursday, Feb. 23. Blackburn, who as an undergraduate was a member of the university's nationally-ranked volleyball team between 2004 and 2008, compared the challenges of medical school to her time as a student athlete. Deadline nears for Phillips Medal nominations
Thursday, March 1, is the deadline for nominations for this year's 2012 Phillips Medal of Public Service, named for the late J. Wallace Phillips and Jody Galbreath Phillips, longtime friends of Ohio University, and one of the highest honors bestowed by OU-HCOM.
The honor is awarded annually in one or more of the following categories:
- For osteopathic medical practice exemplifying the best tradition of family medicine;
- For osteopathic hospital administration exemplifying the best tradition of humane, concerned administration and public involvement; and
- For public policy leadership exemplifying the best tradition of democratic concern for the public good and public welfare.
Nominations, which must include a written statement of no more than 500 words of why the recipient should be considered, can be sent to Jill Harman, director of admissions.
This year's award will be bestowed during the Class of 2016 Convocation and White Coat Ceremony on Saturday, July 28, 2012, in Templeton Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.

Mark your calendars now for the Ohio Osteopathic Symposium, the state's premier continuing medical education event for osteopathic physicians, April 18 to 22, at the Columbus Hilton Easton Town Center. The Symposium is a collaboration of the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine and the Ohio Osteopathic Foundation.

Students: Enroll now for student research expo
Registration for the Ohio University Student Research and Creative Activity Expo remains open until Sunday, March 18. Students must enroll online to participate in this year's event, which will be held 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Thursday, May 3, at the Convocation Center.
Participation is open to all undergraduate, graduate and medical students, as well as postdoctoral fellows, on the Athens and regional campuses. Posters, exhibits, performances, film screenings and other presentation formats are welcome.
The Student Expo is sponsored by the Office of the Vice President for Research and Creative Activity and Dean of the Graduate College, Office of the Executive Vice President and Provost, Office of the President, and the University Libraries.
