Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit announced the appointment of Kenneth H. Johnson, D.O., as dean of the Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine effective Monday, August 20.
Johnson was selected to lead the Heritage College during the course of a national search. Two to receive Phillips Medals at Convo
Please join us for the Convocation and White Coat Ceremony for the Class of 2016 on Saturday, July 28, at 2 p.m. in Ohio University's Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium. Please note that this year's ceremony is earlier because of the university's switch to semesters this summer.
Featured speakers at this year's event and recipients of the Phillips Medal of Public Service include Richard L. Bronson, M.D., F.A.C.P., and Yvette McGree Brown, J.D., justice of the Supreme Court of Ohio.
For the second year, the event will be broadcast live on the college's website. A reception will follow the ceremony in Walter Hall.
With semesters, classes start on the hour
The college's first semester-based courses began with orientation for the Class of 2016 on Monday, July 9. ALL classes for first and second year students who will be taking semester-based courses will begin on the hour and end at 10 minutes before the hour.
As a reminder to faculty, staff and students, OU-HCOM will be the only college at Ohio University to begin classes on the hour under the semester system. The rest of the university will follow a staggered schedule throughout the day due to class time lengths of 55 minutes on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and 80 minutes long on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
To verify times and locations of OU-HCOM classes, consult the schedules posted here

Central Ohio extension campus site now official
Ohio University and the City of Dublin, Ohio, last week completed real estate transactions on 60 acres, part of which becomes the site of the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM) central Ohio extension campus.
The property also includes an area for the development of education and technology related partnerships that will support the City of Dublin's envisioned West Innovation District.
In a complimentary transaction, Dublin City Council and Ohio University signed an economic development agreement, which formalizes Dublin's conveyance of 46 additional acres surrounding the medical school extension campus. The property donated to the university is valued at $4.6 million.

Program A.C.T.I.V.E. enters second round
The second round of Program A.C.T.I.V.E. (Appalachians Coming Together to Increase Vital Exercise) is now underway at two sites, one in southeast Ohio and lead by OU-HCOM, the other in West Virginia through the West Virginia University Human Performance Lab. Researchers hope the community-based studies will point to the most effective treatment for people dealing with both Type 2 diabetes and depression: talk therapy, exercise or a combination of the two.
"Our initial study found that the combination of cognitive based therapy and structured exercise helped both diabetes and depression. We now want to know which component is critical. Program A.C.T.I.V.E. will randomize people to routine care to best understand what will help people most," said Jay Shubrook D.O., associate professor of family medicine.
