College researchers assist rhino poaching victims
Spring break became busy for Lawrence Witmer, Ph.D., professor of anatomy, and his lab team, who have been assisting in an effort to treat severely mutilated South African rhinoceros. Three rhinos recently were victims of poachers, who severely injured the rhinos faces while removing their horns for sale on the black market. One died shortly after the attack, and another died just this past Sunday from the wounds inflicted more than three weeks ago.

A South African veterinarian treating the animals contacted Witmer for his assistance earlier this month. "My team has done work on rhinos and the nasal cavities of a variety of endangered mammal species, and this was probably the work that made him aware of me," said Witmer, whose team determined what parts of the animal's nasal cavity were injured in the poaching incident.
The WitmerLab team rescanned Kehtla, the male white rhino head from the lab's freezer, using the CAT scan at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital. The Athens Messenger recently reported on the effort. You can also follow the WitmerLab's efforts here.
