Hundreds participate in bone marrow initiative

On Monday, Nov. 5, Nathan Denlinger, OMS II, took part in collecting samples from nearly 600 potential bone marrow donors in the Baker Center Theater Lounge from volunteers for Hillel's "Got Swabbed?" campaign.

The Ohio University Jewish community organization organized the event in 2008 as a way to add students, faculty and staff to a registry that connects donors to patients with leukemia and other life-threatening diseases. The procedure requires just a cheek swab, but only around one in 60 donors to Hillel's campaign receives a call for a transplant, due to the difficulty of finding a perfect match.

"I am extremely passionate about this project and so are our OU-HCOM volunteers," said Denlinger, who worked with 15 other OU-HCOM students at the bone marrow drive. "Imagine being able to save someone's life before even getting out of medical school! All of us hope that we will be called, and we will continue to work tirelessly to spread the word to others in the college and in the Athens area about this. Anyone can save a life and make a difference."
