SGA raises funds for student injured in accident 

The Student Government Association is holding a fund drive to help out with medical expenses for the family of Jimmie Jarvis, OMS II, who was severely injured in a motorcycle accident this summer and remains in a coma.

 

Known for his outgoing, cheerful and positive outlook, Jarvis routinely posted various messages of encouragement to his classmates on Facebook before each exam. "Let those parasympathetics rest and digest to get ready for the big day tomorrow. Make sure to get plenty of fluids and have some Imodium on hand just in case that crazy myenteric plexus gets out of hand," he wrote before the GI block exam.

 

Checks made out to OU-HCOM SGA can be dropped into a collection box set up in the Student Affairs office from Monday, Oct. 29, to Friday, Nov. 9, or mailed to:

COMCorps helps Coolville with healthy harvest

Twenty members of COMCorps, the college's AmeriCorps program, will host Coolville Healthy Harvest, an event at Coolville Elementary School on Saturday, Oct. 27, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., as part of this year's "Make a Difference Day."

Yeager honored for 30 years employment at OU
Congratulations to Mike Yeager, administrative coordinator, honored at the Classified Service Awards Reception last week for his 30 years of service to Ohio University. 
 
In an interview with Compass, Yeager said he remembers when the university only had about 12,000 students on the Athens campus.

Social media challenge nets SGA $500

Thanks to more than 500 students and staff, the Student Government Association (SGA) coffers are $500 richer, courtesy of the Ohio Osteopathic Association (OOA). The OOA challenged the student government to generate 500 new likes/follows for the OOA on Facebook and Twitter by Wednesday, Oct. 31, which was reached more than two weeks early. The OOA will present the SGA with a $500 check on Saturday, Nov. 3, during the OOA Student Study Break at the Ohio University Inn.

Halloween comes to the Irvine Bricks on Tuesday

The college's annual OU-HCOM Halloweenie on the Bricks will be held Tuesday, Oct. 30, at noon on the Irvine Bricks.

 

The menu consists of hot dogs, chips, veggies and dip, potluck desserts and drinks. Cost is $4 with a prior RSVP, $5 at the door. Admission is free for those who donate a dessert. Activities include a Best Pumpkin Dessert Contest, featuring a Starbucks Gift Card for first prize, a split-the-pot with tickets for $1 or six for $5, and a costume contest, for those who are inclined to dress up.

 

RSVP to Mike Yeager by noon on Friday, Oct. 26. Desserts should be delivered to the Bricks by 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday.

Do you know a classified employee that is dependable, punctual and productive, possesses a positive attitude, shows initiative, takes on additional responsibilities and serves as a role model?

Help needed to provide medical care for Kenya

Although OU-HCOM will not travel to Kenya this year to provide medical care as part of SHARE Kenya, the college plans to contribute to a group of medical professionals who do plan to make a trip in November.

 

The Global Health Office is holding a collection drive to collect vitamins, particularly for children and pregnant women, as well as over the counter medications (NSAIDS are most critical). Consider purchasing a bottle of vitamins or ibuprofen on your next shopping trip, and drop off the donations in the collection container in the Global Health Office in Grosvenor 224.

Last chance to nominate for student award

Nominations for the Student D.O. of the Year Award (SDOY) are being sought until Friday, Oct. 26. The award is presented annually by the Council of Osteopathic Student Government Presidents, a council of the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine (AACOM). The OU-HCOM winner will be recognized at the annual Distinguished Osteopathic Commitment Awards in the spring, and at Commencement if the winner is a graduating fourth year student. The college recipient also will compete for the National SDOY Award which will be announced at the AACOM annual meeting in April.

 

Eligible students should represent the following ideals and values:

  • Embodiment of the osteopathic philosophy.

Clark co-authors chapter in new sarcopenia book

Brian Clark, Ph.D., professor of neuromuscular biology and director of the Ohio Musculoskeletal and Neurological  Institute and David Russ, P.T., Ph.D., assistant professor in the School of Rehabilitation and Communication Sciences, wrote a chapter in the recently released book, "Sarcopenia," edited by John E. Morley and Alfonso J. Cruz-Jentoft, and published by Wiley-Blackwell. The book covers all recent scientific evidence and treatment options including interventions to improve sarcopenia, nutritional approaches and the future of drug treatments. Danette Pratt, medical illustrator, designed the artwork on the book's cover.
