New campus moves forward after shining review
The Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA) was in Athens and Dublin last week to conduct their inspection for the Central Ohio Extension Campus (COEC). In the exit conference last Friday, James W. Cole, D.O., the COCA site team chair said, "You may not realize how great this place is. You all are the gold standard for colleges of osteopathic medicine. I appreciate what you do here. This is a very special place."

After a thorough two-day review of the facilities and plans for renovations, faculty adequacy model and staffing plan, student services plan and the delivery of the curriculum, the accreditation team found that all standards were met with the exception of two, which were expected. The first concerned execution of the staffing plan and the other the completion of the planned renovations of the facilities in Dublin. These two progress reports are required to be completed in the coming months and before the facility opens for classes.

"This is a huge step towards our vision of becoming the number one primary care producing medical school in Ohio, and the country. We believe our growth into a college with two exceptional campuses, will make us a national destination for medical education," said Dean Kenneth Johnson, D.O.

In a memo announcing the achievement to faculty and staff shortly after the meeting ended, Dr. Johnson wrote, "I am very proud to be dean of this college, working with such a wonderful group of people who have done the hard work over the years that lifts us up to the place where we are now."

The accreditation process was led by Doug Mann, Ph.D., executive assistant to the dean, and during the exit conference the accreditation team singled out Dr. Mann for his efforts in preparation and implementation of the visit. Members of the team reiterated Dr. Cole's impressions, stating that this visit was by far the best organized and one of the easiest and most enjoyable they had conducted in recent years.

Once this favorable report is accepted at a COCA meeting in early December, OU-HCOM will be formally approved to recruit students for the COEC and begin classes in July 2014.

Gala reception highlights extension campus plans
College faculty, staff, students and alumni joined officials from the City of Dublin and OhioHealth for a welcome gala at the site of the new Central Ohio Extension Campus on Thursday, Oct. 25.

"We know it takes a village for a medical school to undergo the kind of transformational growth that we believe will make Ohio a national destination for medical education, and we thank the city of Dublin for their friendship, enthusiasm and support in making this site possible," said Ohio University President Roderick J. McDavis, Ph.D.

Other speakers at the event included Rick Vincent, president and CEO of the Osteopathic Heritage Foundations; Dean Kenneth Johnson, D.O.; and Bruce Vanderhoff, M.D., M.B.A., chief medical officer of OhioHealth. Among those attending were dozens of third and fourth year OU-HCOM students in their rotations in Columbus.

New college mark earns gold winner status

The college's new mark, created by Jeff Brown, communication designer, and the office's design staff, was named a Gold Winner in the best graphic identity/logo category in the 2012 Pride of CASE V Awards.
