Alumnus receives university service award
The Ohio University Alumni Association will honor Charles T. Mehlman, D.O., M.P.H. ('89), with the Distinguished Service Award during the annual Homecoming Gala on Friday, Oct. 12. He is a pediatric orthopedic surgeon at Cincinnati Children's Hospital.
The award, established in 1982, recognizes exceptional service on behalf of alumni chapters, clubs, constituent societies and, in special instances, the university and its colleges and schools. Dr. Mehlman, a medical educator, researcher and mentor, was selected for his engagement with students on pediatric orthopedic surgery, career paths and research opportunities during visits to campus, and his mentorship in the Careers in Medicine program. He also serves on the OU-HCOM capital campaign committee.
A reception honoring Dr. Mehlman will be held Friday, Oct. 12, at 2 p.m. in Grosvenor West 111. Also on Friday, Oct. 12. Mehlman will present "When should I operate on a kid's FX? A case based approach," to first and second year students. The presentation will be held at noon in Irvine 194 with lunch provided. RSVP to Laurie Lach, director of alumni relations, at 593.2151, by Wednesday, Oct. 10.

NIH grant funds study into lower back pain treatment
Brian C. Clark, Ph.D., professor of physiology and director of OMNI, and James S. Thomas, P.T., Ph.D., a professor of physical therapy and director of research in the Division of Physical Therapy in the School of Rehabilitation and Communication Sciences, received a five-year, $2.1 million grant from the NIH to fund a study to find more effective treatments for lower back pain.
The RELIEF Study, which stands for Researching the Effectiveness of Lumbar Interventions for Enhancing Function Study, grew out of an earlier NIH-funded study by Dr. Clark that investigated the neuromuscular mechanisms underlying motor behavior in people with low back pain.
Approximately 60 to 90 percent of U.S. residents will experience lower back pain over the course of their lives. Recent reports indicate that annual costs related to low back pain exceed $90 billion in medical expenses, missed work and lost productivity.
"The study will look at the mechanisms and effectiveness of three different non-surgical interventions used to treat chronic low back pain. It will determine both the physiological effects and clinical effectiveness of the treatments at reducing pain and disability," Dr. Clark said.

OMM leaders gather at OU-HOCM
OU-HCOM and the Department of Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) played host to its colleagues last week as representatives from 28 osteopathic colleges and 37 sites met for the bi-annual meeting of the Educational Council on Osteopathic Principles (ECOP).
"This is the group that's leading the profession nationally," said Tyler Cymet, D.O., associate vice president for medical education for the American Association of Colleges of Osteopathic Medicine. "It's a way for us to have fellowship, support and understanding, and share what's going on."
One of the goals of this meeting was to promote and revise the glossary of osteopathic terminology -- terms and descriptions unique to the osteopathic profession and essential for medical training and for use by organizations like the American Medical Association.
Another objective of the meeting was to come up with a set of modules that describe the core techniques of OMM, including descriptions, indications, contraindications and the research behind its mechanisms.
"There are a lot of new schools coming on board," said Kevin Treffer, D.O., chair of ECOP. He hopes that for the the heads of OMM at those colleges this group can serve as a mentor and act as a sounding board as they develop their curriculum.

Students' participation nabs clinic donation
The Heritage Community Clinic and Community Health Programs recently received a $415 donation, thanks to the Class of 2014.
During Board Review Week last spring, one of the companies which visited on campus -- Doctors in Training -- offered to donate money to a charity of choice of the class for every student that attended the company presentation. "We chose to donate to OU-HCOM's free clinic because we're proud of the service it provides to our community, and the class wanted to be involved in that work in any way we can," said Class President Keri Childers, OMS III.
