Career Medical Specialties lecture series begins
The 2012-2013 Career Medical Specialties lecture series kicks off this week with presentations by two OU-HCOM alumni.
Mitchell J. Silver, D.O. ('89), F.A.C.C., F.A.B.V.M., will present "The Career Path and Day of an Interventional Cardiologist," in which he will share his expertise and insights on the topic of cardiology and vascular medicine on Thursday, Sept. 13, at noon in Irvine 194. Dr. Silver is the director at the Vascular Imaging and the Center for Critical Limb Care at the McConnell Heart and Vascular Hospital, Riverside Methodist Hospital; the director of Section of Cardiovascular Medicine as well as director, Cardiac Catheterization, at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital; and is an investigator at the Midwest Cardiology Research Foundation, a the division of OhioHealth Research Institute.
He is a member of the OU-HCOM Society of Alumni and Friends Board of Directors and currently serves on the OU-HCOM Admission Selection Committee. He is also a clinical associate professor of cardiology for OU-HCOM.
On Friday, Sept. 14, at noon in Irvine 194, Dawn Sammons, D.O. ('03), M.E., L.P.C., will share her expertise and insights on the topic of dermatology. Sammons is owner Oakview Dermatology where she and her staff provide care for patients of all ages, including surgical and cosmetic procedures. Dr. Sammons is also the chief of staff at O'Bleness Memorial Hospital and serves as chair of the Medical Education Committee at O'Bleness.
Dr. Sammons is also clinical assistant professor for OU-HCOM and Dermatology Residency Clinic Supervisor for O'Bleness Memorial Hospital.
The lectures and lunch are sponsored by the OU-HCOM Office of Alumni Affairs and the OU-HCOM Society of Alumni and Friends.

Mini lecture series focuses on family medicine
Three OU-HCOM alumni will participate in the Family Medicine Mini Lecture Series next week for first and second year students. The lectures, which all begin at noon in Irvine 194 where lunch will be provided, include:
- Monday, Sept. 17 - Jason T. Weihl, D.O. ('98)
- Tuesday, Sept. 19 - Jennifer L. Gwilyn, D.O. ('03)
- Thursday, Sept. 20 - Michael E. Campolo, D.O. ('83)

AMSA hosts screening of healthcare documentary
OU-HCOM is one of 50 university locations from across the country that will host an advance screening of the documentary "ESCAPE FIRE: The Fight to Rescue American Healthcare," on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at 5:30 p.m. in Irvine 194. The showing is free to members of the Ohio University community, but does require a university identification card for admission.
The documentary depicts the nation's healthcare status quo and highlights efforts to improve methods of prevention and healing to patient-driven healthcare. To view a trailer for the film, click here. To learn more about the film, click here.

Research seed funding available
The CORE Research Office announced the second call for proposals for Clinical Research Seed Funding Grants for 2012-2013. All OU-HCOM and affiliate COM medical students and residents within the CORE are eligible to apply for the grants of up to $3,000. Grants are awarded on a competitive basis, and the deadline to apply is Wednesday, Oct. 31. Awards will be announced on November.
