Diabetes Institute director appointed
Ohio University appointed Darlene Berryman, Ph.D., R.D., as director of The Diabetes Institute at Ohio University, the first initiative of the Ohio University Health Sciences Center. The Institute was created to bring together the many diabetes-related programs throughout the university in an effort to best address one of the most critical health-care issues facing Americans.
The Institute will expand opportunities for further development of diabetes research, clinical care, education and community outreach.
Dr. Berryman is one of several strategic appointments made possible in part by the historic $105 million gift to the Ohio University Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine (OU-HCOM) from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundations. Dr. Berryman has a dual appointment with both OU-HCOM and the College of Health Sciences and Professions. In addition to her directorship responsibilities, she will continue her obesity research at the Edison Biotechnology Institute and will remain as associate professor of food and nutrition and continue to oversee the Diabetes Certificate Program. Free clinics benefit with United Appeal partnership
Ohio University employees can now make charitable contributions to a unit of our college that strengthens the health and well-being of thousands of people in our region. OU-HCOM Community Health Programs (CHP) is joining United Appeal of Athens County, meaning we have a great new way to give to a program that operates solely with grants and philanthropic sponsorship.
"United Appeal support will be used for much needed operational support for our community clinics. Remember, these clinics are provided at no cost to qualifying individuals," said Kathy Trace, M.S.A., B.S.N., R.N., director of CHP. "Their support will go a long way to enhance our services for people in Athens County."
CHP is now among 19 agencies that will receive funding, though community donations, from United Appeal of Athens County. Through donations, United Appeal provided more than $1.5 million to health and human service programs throughout Athens County during the past five years.
Donations to United Appeal can be specifically earmarked for CHP, said United Appearl Executive Director Pam Harvey. This year's United Appeal kick-off campaign will be held beginning on Oct. 6. Information about how to sign up for paycheck withholding will be provided at that time. Mark Sutton, L.S.W., project manager in the Department of Geriatric Medicine/Gerontology serves as the president of the United Appeal of Athens County's Board of Directors, and Jessica Wingett, C.P.S., manager of the Office of Research and Grants, served as the Ohio University United Appeal chairperson last year. The university will conduct its own internal campaign later this fall.
