Lifestyle link to chronic diseases topic of lecture 
Frank Schwartz, M.D., James O. Watson Endowed Research Chair, professor of endocrinology and director of the Diabetes/Endocrine Diseases Biorepository, will host the first Science Café discussion of the year today, Sept. 5, at 5 p.m. in the Baker University Center Front Room. Science Café is a series of science lectures sponsored by Sigma Xi, the Scientific Research Society chapter at Ohio University.
 
Schwartz will present "Socioeconomic Stress, Appalachia and Chronic Disease," which will focus on lifestyle interventions to overcome chronic diseases. The talk is free and open to the public. Read more

 

Diabetes research examines effect of antioxidant diet

The Ohio University Office of Research Communications' Spring/Summer edition of Perspectives featured a story about the research by Felicia Nowak, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of endocrinology, and Sharon Inman, Ph.D., associate professor of renal physiology, whose work is funded by a three-year grant from the National Institutes of Health. The pair are examining whether an antioxidant diet could mitigate the symptoms of diabetes. As part of the project, they examined 144 diabetic and healthy rats, fed them a diet fortified with selenium, manganese, Vitamin C and other antioxidant vitamins and minerals, and then monitored various biomedical markers of their health at ages six, 13 and 20 weeks. Stop by Casa for Klabunde retirement reception 

An informal retirement reception for Richard Klabunde, Ph.D., associate professor of physiology, will be held Thursday, Sept. 6, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Casa Nueva, 6 West State Street. Faculty, staff and students are invited to stop by and wish him well.

Symposium addresses treatment of veterans

A community symposium, "Keys to successful transition and integration of veterans and service members," will be held on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Kenworth Auditorium, Adena PACCAR Medical Education Center, in Chillicothe.

 

Co-sponsored by OU-HCOM's Area Health Education Center, the symposium's keynote address will be given by Ohio Supreme Court Justice Evelyn Lundberg Stratton, J.D. Seven hours of AOA Category 2-A credits as approved by the AOA Continuing Medical Education Council are anticipated. Cost of the symposium is $40, which includes breakfast and lunch.

John Dehmann, has accepted the facilities coordinator position in the Office of Administrative and Financial Service. His new office location will be Grosvenor 040 and his telephone number is 593.2172, effective Monday, Aug. 27.
