Greater than the sum of our parts

President and CEO, Cleveland Clinic Regional Hospitals

Why did you want your hospital to be involved with the CORE?

In medical education, I see purpose, wisdom and compassion. I see higher calling. There is a perfect marriage between health care and teaching. Medical education energizes ussome docs, who you might say didn’t have a lot of spring in their step, really came alive and more engaged by the teaching process.

Before the CORE, I think medical education in the state was much more variable. The CORE added a level of quality and consistency by coordinating resources and increasing peer interaction among osteopathic teaching doctors and students from different regions.

Has CORE membership helped your physician and resident recruiting efforts?

There has been a noticeable loyalty among students and residents after their time with us. They have a network to come back to. That said, our first job is to prepare them for their first-choice professional opportunity, whatever that may be.

Your hospital was an early supporter of the Academic & Research Center, a new state-of-the-art research facility. Why is that project so valuable, from your point of view?

Supporting the ARC just makes sense. Our focus is on healing, supporting the patient, and research is a natural extension of caring. All advances in medicine come through that research. This will enhance efforts at our clinic, particularly around diabetes, which greatly affects the health status in our community. We’re happy to take on bench research, make it come alive at our hospital. continue
