Our college is part of a profession at the vanguard of health-care delivery. The osteopathic profession’s emphasis on health promotion, disease prevention and primary care sets the standard for the future of medical education and practice.

The "total patient" approach to health care was pioneered over 125 years ago by the founder of osteopathic medicine, Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, and remains the foundation for the way D.O.s practice today. Dissatisfied with the effectiveness of 19th Century medicine, Dr. Still advanced the concept of wellness, the unity of all body systems, the importance of preventive medicine and the prominent role of the musculoskeletal system in restoring good health.

The training of osteopathic physicians (D.O.s) is based on a medical tradition guided by four basic principles:

  • The body is a single unit.
  • The body has intrinsic self-regulatory and healing mechanisms.
  • The body’s structure and function are interrelated.
  • Disease is an effect, not a cause.

This philosophy provides the foundation for education at OU-COM. The application of these principles allows our graduates — as family doctors, pediatricians, surgeons, neo-natologists or psychiatrists — to bring to their patients the most comprehensive health care available.
