J. O. Watson, D.O., Endowed Research Chair
The
Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine takes great pleasure in
announcing the appointment of Leonard D. Kohn,
M.D., to the J. O. Watson, D.O.,
Endowed Research Chair. This position is funded by a $1.5 million endowment from
the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation. Dr. Kohn received his B.A. degree from
Columbia College and his M.D. degree from Columbia College of Physicians and
Surgeons in New York. After an internship and residency at Columbia Presbyterian
Medical Center, Dr. Kohn joined the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive
and Kidney Diseases in Bethesda, MD. During his career at NIH, Dr. Kohn served
as Medical Director and Chief of the Cell Regulation Section of the Metabolic
Diseases Branch of NIDDK.
In 2000, Dr. Kohn left NIH to become a Distinguished Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Biomedical Sciences at OU-COM and in the Edison Biotechnology Institute. Dr. Kohn’s research has focused primarily on thyroid disorders. He has nearly 400 scientific publications to his credit, and has served on the editorial boards of many scientific journals. Dr. Kohn holds five patents and has several more pending. In 2000, he became the president and CEO of Interthyr Corporation, which is located in the Innovation Center at Ohio University.
His current research centers on the treatment and prevention of the macro- and micro-vascular complications of diabetes, which lead to increased cardiovascular disease, stroke, eye disease, and amputations that are common in patients with diabetes. As the J. O. Watson, D.O., Endowed Research Chair, Dr. Kohn will lead a new program at Ohio University in diabetes treatment and care. Frank Schwartz, M.D., an endocrinologist from Parkersburg, WV, will join the OU-COM clinical faculty in July. Dr. Kohn and Dr. Schwartz plan to establish a new Diabetes Center that will address this major health problem in Southeast Ohio and the Appalachian region through the provision of services and research leading to new treatments for diabetes. The Diabetes Center will be part of the Appalachian Rural Health Institute, which will receive a $500,000 federal appropriation this year to initiate its activities.
The
long awaited, and much needed, position of the CORE Research Director has
finally been filled. With a five-year grant funded by the Osteopathic Heritage
Foundation, the College and CORE extends a warm welcome to
Joy Matthews-López in her new role.
Joy comes to OU-COM from the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, NJ, where she worked as a Measurement Statistician since July 2000. Even though she worked in New Jersey, Joy lives in Athens with her husband and four sons. Joy has a Master of Science in applied mathematics from NC State University. She is nearing completion of a Ph.D. from Ohio University in education measurement, research and evaluation. Additionally, Joy was a graduate student representative to OU’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) for two years.
Joy's mission in her new position is to contribute to the validation of the osteopathic profession through the support of research and other scholarly work. When not visiting the CORE sites, she can be reached at her COM office in 319 Grosvenor Hall, 740-593-2380, or by email at joy.matthews-lopez.1@ohio.edu.
Shane Gilkey, Director of the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs, has assigned Patricia Leib as the ORSP Grants and Contracts Manager for Proposal Preparation and Kristen Geiger as the Contract Administrator to the following COM units: Office of the Dean; Biomedical Sciences; COM Operations; COM- Research & Grants; Community and Clinical Services; Family Medicine; Social Medicine; Specialty Medicine; and Student Affairs. Patti may be reached at phone: 740.593.9987, fax: 740.593-0379, or e-mail: leib@ohio.edu. Kristen may be reached at phone: 740.593.9985, fax: 740-593-0379, or e-mail: geiger@ohio.edu.
Assignments for Academic Affairs/CORE remain Erin Nash, Grants and Contracts Manager for Proposal Preparation, and Thea Arocho, Contract Administrator. Erin may be reached at phone: 740-593-9750, or e-mail: nashe@ohio.edu. Thea may be reached at phone: 740-593-2856, or e-mail arocho@ohio.edu.
Brentwood Foundation Director Terri Kovach visited the OU-COM Athens campus on March 19. Established in 1994, this Foundation is dedicated to the “advancement of osteopathic medicine.” The purpose of the recent site visit was to review previously funded projects and to discuss future funding opportunities. The Brentwood Foundation is interested in working with the Office of Research and Grants and the CORE Research Director to coordinate proposal requests to the Foundation.
Please make it a point to contact Christine Knisely, Director of Grant Development in the COM Office of Research & Grants at 740-593-2214 so we can respond to your project ideas and assistance with the application process. Annual application deadlines are April 1 and September 1.

Come See Us - Early and Often!

Thanks to the OU-COM and staff who attended our last two Research and Grants Office workshops. The first session focused on the pre-application process. The second workshop provided a detailed discussion of the OU transmittal form, a document that has been known to give even the stout of heart an anxious moment. Thea Arocho from OU’s Office of Research & Sponsored Programs offered the background for the transmittal form entries and helped dispel the mystery behind those cryptic questions. By hosting these workshops we hope you’ll find some useful information. Know that our office is a resource for assisting with the proposal process - come see us often and come see us early.

Greetings from the desk of the CORE Research Director! I’m pleased to have the opportunity to communicate with you through this quarterly newsletter. Over the course of the next year, I hope to address issues that will be of interest to you. My focus will be on various aspects of validity. Particular topics to be covered are survey design and piloting, sample size and how it relates to statistical power, and ethical considerations of research involving human subjects.
Statistical analyses are but a small part of any given research effort. Unfortunately, there is a tendency among novice researchers to limit the role of statistical support to only that of analysis. It is impossible to test a hypothesis that is ambiguously stated or to interpret analyses without a meaningful context. The research question, study design, sampling techniques, and data collection methods determine which statistical procedures are appropriate and subsequently drive decisions regarding minimally adequate sample sizes. Sample size, in turn, will impact the statistical power needed to draw conclusions and correctly interpret the data. It is the representativeness of that sample that will support generalizability of the findings. By utilizing sound sampling techniques and clean research methodology, valid and replicable results are but a study away.
I am always open to questions, comments, and/or suggestions. You may reach me by email at joy.matthews-lopez.1@ohio.edu or by phone at 740-593-2380.
