J. O. Watson Endowed Research Chair

Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine

Athens, Ohio

Ohio University is seeking candidates for the J. O. Watson Endowed Research Chair in the College of Osteopathic Medicine.  This new Chair, supported through an endowment from the Osteopathic Heritage Foundation, was created to attract an experienced clinical researcher in the areas of diabetes or cardiovascular disease in rural settings, because these diseases are critical health problems in Appalachian Ohio.

Qualifications.  Candidates must have a D.O., M.D. and/or Ph.D. degree, a record of academic achievement including demonstrated research expertise in diabetes or cardiovascular disease and the ability to attract external funding.

Responsibilities.  The Chair is expected to establish a vigorous externally funded research program that directly addresses the increased incidence of heart disease or diabetes and effective treatment modalities for rural populations in Ohio.  The Chair will assume a leadership position in clinical research in the College of Osteopathic Medicine and serve as a catalyst to build interdisciplinary teams of clinicians and other health researchers to focus on significant rural health problems.  The Chair will have the opportunity to collaborate with the Centers for Osteopathic Research and Education (CORE) hospitals throughout Ohio, play a leading role in the formation of a new Appalachian and Rural Health Institute, and participate in the medical curriculum on a limited basis.

Rank and Salary.  The Endowed Chair will be appointed to the rank of professor (with tenure) in an appropriate academic department.  Compensation will include a competitive University salary base, with possible supplementation from a clinical practice plan or external sources.

Benefits.  Ohio University will provide excellent fringe benefits, research facilities and startup funds, with ongoing support from the J. O. Watson endowment.  In addition, the new Endowed Chair holder will have the opportunity to recruit an individual for a new faculty position to complement the Chair’s research program.  The Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine plays a central role in medical research, health care delivery and the training of primary care physicians in Ohio.  Athens, located in scenic southeast Ohio, enjoys the cultural advantages of a university town.

Applications, including a curriculum vitae, statement of research interests, and names of at least three references, should be sent to:  Jack Blazyk, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Research, 234 Grosvenor Hall, Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine, Athens, OH 45701.  The search committee will begin to review applications in December 2002 and will accept applications until the position is filled.  Inquiries or nominations may be directed to Dr. Blazyk at 740-593-1742 or blazyk@ohiou.edu.
