Frequently Asked Questions

What is Summer Scholars?

Summer Scholars is a six-week program
coordinated by the Ohio University College of
Osteopathic Medicine’s Office of Admissions.  It is designed to give students a taste of what medical school will be like.  The program is facilitated by current OU-COM faculty and upper-level medical students.

Who is eligible to participate?

Applicants to the program should be members of an underrepresented minority population, economically disadvantaged or educationally disadvantaged.

How many students are selected each year?

Up to twenty-five students are selected to participate.

Where do I send my application materials?

Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine

Admissions Office – Summer Scholars

102 Grosvenor Hall

Athens, OH  45701

Can I use letters of recommendation from a current medical school application?

No. Because the Summer Scholars program is unique, your letters of recommendation should reflect your application to this specific program, not to medical school in general.

Why do you need my or my parent’s tax information?

This information is requested so that we may determine a student’s economic status for participation in the program.  All application information will be kept confidential and all tax information will be shredded at the conclusion of the selection process.

Do I have to be interviewed to participate in Summer Scholars?

No.  Selection for participation in Summer Scholars will be based upon your application materials, including letters of recommendation.  You will be notified via regular mail, email, or phone if you are selected to participate.  The committee plans to have selections made by early April, 2007.
