The Cornwell Center
for Cardiovascular and Diabetes care is an interdisciplinary health service
for the prevention and treatment of diabetes and heart
disease, which are often linked.

Experiences are conducted
with a dietitian in
the Cornwell Diabetes Center, located next door to O'Bleness Hospital, unless other instructions are given by Ms.
Bailey.
O’Bleness is within walking distance of OU-COM, just across
Shafer St. If you drive, use the two lots available for
employee parking on the South Shafer side; look for the
green “Employee Parking” sign.

Special Notes: You will be participating as an
observer in a one-on-one patient education session if
possible and learning about various options in diabetes
education from Ms. Bailey. Please call the day
before your CCE to let her know you are coming.

Specific CCE Goal:
Gain experience in a diabetes
education program that provides primary and tertiary preventive services to adults
with diabetes in Appalachia, OH.
Objectives/Activities:
By participating in this CCE assignment,
medical students will:

Discuss the symptoms of and diagnostic
criteria for diabetes.

Discuss the comorbid conditions associated
with diabetes.

List and describe medications commonly
prescribed to treat diabetes.

Review pertinent laboratory results for
patients with appointments at the Center.
-
Observe diabetes patient education and
participate as appropriate.
-
Review patient handouts provided by the
Diabetes/Endocrine Center.
-
Identify barriers to health care
accessibility in Appalachia.
Equipment Needed for Activity:
Stethoscope
Dress:
White lab jacket, identification badge,
and professional casual clothing (no blue jeans please).
