Agency Information:
ATCO,
Inc. is a work training center for adults with developmental
disabilities. ATCO assists individuals with mental
retardation and developmental disabilities to picture their
potentials. This is accomplished through vocational training
and employment (such as our pen business), awareness and
life skills training, art, music, various therapies and a
variety of community-based activities.

Students are to arrive
at 8:30 AM. If you cannot keep your appointment or if you
will arrive late, please call the workshop and leave a
message.
Specific CCE Goals:

Gain an understanding of the special needs
of adults who have neurological and musculoskeletal
disorders.

Increase knowledge of diagnosed developmental
disabilities.

Identify secondary
conditions that affect this population.

Obtain knowledge of
service offered to adults in the community with
developmental disabilities.
Objectives/Activities:
By participating in this
CCE assignment, medical students will:
-
Observe consumers and
recognize adaptations or strategies they use while working
and achieving personal habilitation goals.

Observe assistance
provided by staff members to achieve personal habilitation
goals.
-
Review 4 of the major
developmental disabilities affecting adults.
-
List 5 secondary conditions,
and their symptoms, associated with consumers in this
facility.
-
List approaches taken to
manage secondary conditions, including the physician's role
in the management process.

Describe community
resources available to adults with developmental
disabilities.
Dress:
Identification badge,
and professional casual clothing (please no tennis shoes or
jeans).

Responsibilities of
the Medical Student:
-
While on agency
property, medical students will conform to all applicable
policies and procedures of the agency.

Medical students will
exercise confidentiality with regard to all patient and/or
staff information gained during the clinical experience.

Medical students are
financially responsible for any illnesses, injuries, or
other health problems they may incur during their clinical
experiences.
Directions:
At the end of Court
Street, turn right onto Carpenter Street (the last traffic
light). This will turn into Stimson Avenue. Stay on
Stimson Avenue; go past the Shell station on the right.
Turn right onto Campbell Street at the next traffic light.
This is a short street (~100 feet). Turn right at the stop
sign. ATCO is directly on the left. This is a large stucco
building painted gray. Parking is limited; you may want to
walk. If you go past Rax’s, you have missed Campbell
Street. |
