Alcoholics Anonymous
is a fellowship of
men and women who share their experience, strength and hope
with each other that they may solve their common problem and
help others to recover from alcoholism.©
Open meetings are held 3
times each week in three locations in Athens. Closed
meetings are held more often but are open only to
people seeking help.
CCE Site:
Monday evenings in the cafeteria in the basement of Doctor's
Hospital of Nelsonville; the group meets from 8 - 9 PM.
Park behind the hospital in the Emergency Department lot and
enter next to the ER entrance.
Tuesday evenings in the
basement of the Central United Methodist Church in Athens;
the group meets from 7 - 8 PM. Parking is free on the
streets around the church.
Special Notes:
If you will be unable to attend the CCE,
48 working hours advance notice must be given to the CCE
office to
reschedule the experience.
Before attending an AA meeting, you are
required to attend the presentation by Dr. Clay or read the
following pages from Principles of Addiction Medicine,
available in the LRC:
17-28 on genetics 51-55 on neurochemistry 249-289 on diagnosis 327-338 on treatment 698-715 on 12 step programs
You must also attend a
debriefing session scheduled by the preceptor at the end of
the quarter.

Specific CCE Goals:
After completing this assignment,
the medical student will have:
- Increased knowledge of the
theories of genetics and environment in precipitating
alcoholism.
- Increased knowledge of the
neurochemistry of alcoholism.
- Increased knowledge of the
diagnostic process for alcoholism.
- Increased understanding of the
treatment for alcoholism, including the effectiveness of
12-step programs.
Objectives/Activities:
By participating in this
CCE assignment, medical students will:

Study the neurochemistry and
genetics of alcoholism.

Analyze the diagnostic criteria
for alcoholism.

Assess the resources available
to an alcoholic in search of treatment.

Attend an AA meeting
accompanied by preceptor.

Please wear professional
casual clothes. Do not wear
a white jacket.

Directions:
To the site in Nelsonville: Take 33 West toward Columbus. Travel through
Nelsonville. At the flashing light turn right and go
up the hill. Park behind the hospital.
To the site in Athens:
From COM, take Shafer St. to the right past the OU Credit
Union. At the light, cross Union Street. Turn
left at the first stop sign onto State St. At the stop
sign just past Miller's Chicken, turn right. The
church is 2 blocks up on your left.
