led by two radiation oncologists,
offers
state-of-the-art radiation oncology and a comprehensive
approach to cancer treatment. Athens Cancer Center has been
providing radiation oncology to the Athens area for over 36
years. The Center
is affiliated with O'Bleness
Memorial Hospital, a private, not-for-profit hospital in
Athens, Ohio.

The Castrop Center is located near O’Bleness
Memorial Hospital. The center is within walking distance of OU-COM,
just across Shafer St.

Specific CCE Goals:
· Understand
the basics of how radiology can be used to treat neoplastic
diseases.
· Witness
the emotional, physical and family dynamics of patients
undergoing radiation therapy.
· Observe
the activities of an out-patient radiology/oncology unit.
Objectives/Activities:
By participating in this assignment, medical students will be able to:
Discuss
the dynamics involved in the use of radiation
to
reduce or eliminate neoplastic cells.
Observe
the steps taken to prepare a patient for and administer
radiation therapy·
Assist in
the administration of radiation therapy as
appropriate.
Interview
patients and families when possible to learn more
about
the impact of terminal and chronic illness on their lives.
Observe
the responsibilities of physicians and/or nurses while on
the unit.
Equipment Needed for Activity:
None
Dress:
White lab jacket and identification
badge. Please wear professional casual clothes, no blue
jeans or tennis shoes.
Responsibilities of the Medical
Student:
· While on agency property, medical students
will conform to all applicable policies and procedures of
the agency.
· Medical students will exercise confidentiality
with regard to all patient and/staff information gained
during the clinical experience.
