Special Notes:
Medical students should arrive at 9:00 AM.
If you will arrive even a few minutes late, call
the school and leave a message if the contact person is
unavailable.
Specific CCE Goals:

Gain an understanding of special needs of
children who have neurological and musculoskeletal
disorders.

Increase knowledge of diagnosed developmental
disabilities.
-
Obtain knowledge of services offered to
children with developmental disabilities in the community.
Objectives/Activities:
By participating in this CCE assignment,
medical students will:
-
Recognize adaptations made by children and
staff members, including adaptive equipment or medical devices, by observing children in the classroom
setting.

Observe specific assistance from staff
members to aid the children in completion of classroom
tasks.

List 4 (four) of the major developmental
disabilities, noting how the differences among the various
types of disabilities impact affected children.

Describe community resources available to
children with developmental disabilities and their families.

Observe the school physical and/or
occupational therapists treating children who have
developmental disabilities, noting variations in
musculoskeletal and neurological systems during therapy
sessions.

Dress:
Wear identification badge but NO white lab jackets
Responsibilities of
the medical student:
-
While on agency property, medical students
will conform to all applicable policies and procedures of
the agency. Medical students will be required to sign
a confidentiality statement provided by the Athens County
Board of Developmental Disabilities.

Medical students’ clinical experience at
Beacon School will involve observation only.
-
Medical students will exercise
confidentiality with regard to all patient and/or staff
information gained during the clinical experience.

Medical students must check for calamity day
cancellation of school, via radio station WXTQ 105.5 FM, the
Athens Messenger, or TV station 12.
Directions:
From OU-HCOM, turn right onto
Richland Avenue. Cross over the bridge (Hocking River)
and at the red light, turn right onto Route 682. At
the next red light, turn left onto Route 56 West.
Beacon School is on the left side of the highway, adjacent
to Morrison Elementary School, about 1 mile out of town.
