Doctor’s Hospital of Nelsonville (DHON) – Laboratory and Pharmacy

Agency Information:
Doctors Hospital Nelsonville is supported by a staff of more than 50 physicians and 250 allied health professionals and associates. The hospital offers 15 acute care beds and 10 sub-acute care beds. The 24 hour a day emergency department is staffed by a physician at all times and has helicopter transport available. Doctors Hospital Nelsonville offers a wide range of rehabilitative services and houses an on-site specialty medicine clinic, an on-site dialysis clinic, a 7-bed Intensive/Coronary Care Unit, and inpatient, outpatient and emergency surgical services.

Special Notes
If you will arrive even a few minutes late, please call the laboratory contact person.  This CCE experience combines experiences in both the DHON Laboratory and the DHON Pharmacy and starts in the laboratory which is located on the first floor of DHON - just follow the signs.  Students are usually assigned to this CCE in pairs; contact the CCE Administrative Coordinator if you want to carpool. 

CCE Goals:
Gain experience in prescription and over the counter (OTC) medications in a hospital pharmacy.

Experience the dynamics of a hospital laboratory and acquire knowledge
of the diagnostic tools available to physicians in an acute care setting
.

Objectives:
By participating in this CCE assignment, medical students will:

Pharmacy:
Acquire knowledge of prescriptions: proper dosages, dosing intervals, administration, contraindications, warnings and costs.

Learn proper prescription writing & abbreviations.            

Observe computer systems & their ability to track patient profiles.

Describe how the system works once the physician writes the order.

Laboratory:
Witness the collection of laboratory specimens and performance of lab tests.

Recognize the most common lab tests used as diagnostic tools.

Observed phlebotomy and recognize the most common site for blood collection.

Equipment Needed for Activity:
None

Dress:
White lab jacket and identification badge.  Please wear professional casual clothes, no blue jeans or tennis shoes.   

Responsibilities of the Medical Student:

·    While on agency property, medical students will conform to all applicable policies and procedures of the agency.

·    Medical students will exercise confidentiality with regard to all patient and/or staff information gained during the clinical experience.

Directions
Take Route 33 West to Nelsonville.  Go all the way through Nelsonville until you come to a “Y” intersection as you are leaving town.  Go straight a few yards until you see a sign on the right for DHON.  Turn right at the sign, go up the hill and park in front of the hospital.  Enter the front door and look for the lobby elevators; the laboratory is on the first floor.
